Ruth Lenore Dyson passed away peacefully at her home in Calgary on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the age of 90 years.
Ruth was born in Edmonton on May 20, 1917 and moved to Calgary with her family in 1924. Her school days were spent in Calgary and in 1935 she entered Michigan State University where she received a B.Sc. majoring in Food and Nutrition and later received a Master’s Degree from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Following her graduation from Michigan State, Ruth attended the Calgary Normal School and spent two years teaching in a rural one room school house. After that little adventure, Ruth began her dietetic internship at St. Paul’s hospital in Vancouver. Most of Ruth’s working life was spent in the United States from Honolulu to Tacoma, Chicago, Baltimore and Boston. Along the way Ruth made many life-long friends. She loved to travel and had many amusing tales of her adventures and misadventures. After nearly fifty years out of the country, Ruth returned to Calgary in 1972 and spent the next five years at the Calgary General Hospital as chief therapeutic dietician, retiring in 1977.
Ruth is survived by her niece Elissa (Clark) Ashworth; her grand-nephew Sean Sinclair (Suzie); her grand-niece Samantha (Larry) Derbyshire; as well as numerous cousins and many friends in both Canada and the United States. She was predeceased by her brother Donald Dyson, her sister Marion Winter, her niece Carol Winter and her nephew Brian Winter.
