DUNLAP, Jean Louise (nee Kaufman)

September 10, 1917 – August 30, 2012

Jean Louise Dunlap (nee Kaufman) was embraced by the loving arms of her Lord on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the age of 94 years.

Jean was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on September 10, 1917 to Howard and Ethel Kaufman. Except for a brief period in California as a youth, she spent most of her formative years in Tulsa through high school and the University of Tulsa from which she graduated with a BA degree in 1939. Jean married her high school sweetheart George Dunlap on February 10, 1940. She lived in Tulsa where George was employed by Sun Oil Co. until she enlisted in the US Navy following the entry of the United States in World War II. They lived in Washington, D.C. until George was assigned as a Naval Intelligence Officer to a post in the Pacific, at which point Jean returned to Tulsa to wait out the war. When George returned to his company he was transferred to Dallas, Texas, where in September, 1946 they were blessed with the birth of their only son, Richard. In February 1949 Jean and George were transferred by Sun Oil to Calgary for a period of “two years, no longer than five”. They never moved again except for once within the city of Calgary. Jean spent her entire married life as a housewife and mother and was also very active in the life and activities of Grace Presbyterian Church. The source of one of Jean’s greatest pleasures was “doing” for others, and her loving, giving spirit will be truly missed by many. She had a brief flirtation with golf and a long flirtation with bridge until the ravages of macular degeneration gradually robbed her of both of those pleasures. Jean was also active in her book club (which she was instrumental in founding) and investment club, both of which she continued with after the loss of her sight because she liked to “listen”, and treasured the company of her friends. Jean excelled at any activities that involved being social and her friendships were a very important part of her life.

Jean is survived by her son Rick, of Kalispell, Montana, a brother Howard (Suzanne) of Atlanta, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15 Avenue SW) on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Grace Presbyterian Church 1009 – 15 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2R 0S5 or to the charity of your choice.

In living memory of Jean Dunlap, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Rick, My Mom (Carol Pritchard) called to tell me that your loving mother passed away. We loved your mom and dad very much and I spent time today remembering so many treasured times and how they have touched my life. Your mom was the first person to hold my son 27 years ago – I just looked at the photo last week. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and I will find a quiet spot on Sept 10th to share in prayer and celebration of Jean’s life. God bless you. Judi (Pritchard) Spencer

  9. Rick – Your Mom was the kindest and most generous person I have ever known. She loved everyone she met and always inquired about their welfare. She truly cared about all her friends and acquaintances. She had such a cheerful approach to life even when her macular degeneration worsened. We shared that problem and often discussed it but it never slowed her down. It was a privilege to know her.

  10. Cheryl Parmele :

Rick, I just learned of your Mother’s passing. A childhood friend forwarded the obituary. My parents R.D. and Juanda Hood (deceased) always enjoyed your parents company at dinner or the opera. I have fond memories of being included in one of Jean’s birthday dinners when I was in Calgary visiting my parents and of you and Jean attending a birthday dinner with Mother. Take care – this is a big transition.

  11. Joanne O'Connell (nee Morrison) :

Hi Rick, our next door Dunlap neighbour for many years. Last time we met, I told you of some of my very good memories of your mom and dad. It was their vocation to care and so they did. When my daughter was ill, they showed up every 3 to 4 weeks with a milkshake from Dairy Queen. I’ll never forget that. I won’t be at the service on Monday, so please accept a hug from me in absentia. You’ve been wonderful to Jean. It was noticed….. Take care, Joanne
