DUFF, Dr. Frank

February 25, 1926 – Belfast, N. Ireland
May 1, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Frank Duff went to be with his savior, the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, May 1, 2014.

Frank was born and raised in Belfast, N. Ireland. He graduated from the Queen’s University of Belfast as a medical doctor in December 1948. After further training in Belfast and the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston he obtained his FRCS in 1959. He married Anne Elwood in 1955 and they immigrated to Canada in 1959. He worked as a resident in general surgery at the Colonel Belcher Hospital until obtaining his FRCS Canada in 1960. He practiced surgery in Calgary for 31 years, initially at the General and Holy Cross Hospitals, and later at the Rockyview where he was chief of staff from 1974-1975. In 1966 when Foothills Hospital opened he joined the staff and worked there for the rest of his career, also teaching on the faculty of the University of Calgary. Frank was a life-long scholar, returning to university as a student after he retired. He was a faithful member of Bethany Chapel for 54 years.

He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife Anne and his children Janet (Jeff) Greenman, Stephen, Graham (Jennifer) and grandchildren Athena, Emily, Andrew, Liam and Riley. He is also survived by his sister Agnes in N. Ireland. He was predeceased by his son David in 2003, his parents and four siblings.

Both he and yourself Anne were known of by our family in Belfast, so it was such a lovely experience to meet both of you at the Royal Belfast Academic Institute dinner way back in 1973. Dr. Frank was held in high regard by all who knew him. How thankful we can all be to know that he is now with his Saviour and Friend. Anne, may you and the family be comforted.

    Jess was a surgical patient of Dr. Frank Duff in 1968. We found him to be professional, empathetic and knowledgeable in his field particularly in regard to cancer which was Jess’s illness.
