  4. Ardene Vollman :

    Dear Maureen and family,
I was saddened to hear of Rick’s passing. We worked as colleagues at Mount View and I have fond memories of our times together (e.g., running out of gas on the highway coming back from a meeting in one of the sub-offices!!). Rick was a vociferous advocate for public health and equity; his contribution to dental public health in this province was enormous as was his service to the community. We lost touch over the years once MVHU was “disbanded” but I have often recalled his wisdom and insightful comments from senior management meetings and the fun we had at retreats. He will be missed. Please accept my sincere condolences; may your good memories of times together sustain you through this difficult time.

  6. Carmen Hengeveld :

    Dear Maureen and family,
Please accept my sincere sympathy to all of the family in the loss of Rick – a truly great man. I had the honor and privilege of working with Rick in the Calgary office of Mount View Health Unit as the manager of the Speech and Language Program from 1991 until its disestablishment in 1995. Rick was the epitome of what a manager should strive to be, and he mentored me as a new manager with patience and wisdom. Rick had a great sense of humour as well as a discerning mind which he utilized to accomplish many innovative programs and services in the public health realm. Rick was always the first to stand up for what he believed and took on social justice issues with righteous indignity and exuberant energy. He was a trusted friend and mentor, and you could count on him to be a man of his word. He knew the true value of putting people first ahead of bureaucracy and rules, of facilitating creativity, and of promoting a bigger vision of how things could be for those accessing public health services. He always took the time to offer a kind word of encouragement or a listening ear to colleagues and staff alike. He made a difference to the face of public health as well as to the individual work experiences of those who were lucky enough to work with him. His accomplishments and contributions will not be forgotten.

Dr. Valentini was a friendly and caring colleague and earned the deep respect and admiration from all of us who worked with him at Mount View Health Unit. He was a great leader in the Dental Public Health program in our Province and truly one of a kind. As one of his colleagues, I quickly came to realize what an honest, kind gentleman he was, not to mention his wonderful sense of humor. We enjoyed many years working together. 13. Rick’s programs for dental public health in the former Mountview Health Unit were progressive and innovative – and he was a great manager. The profession could use more like him. I didn’t know Rick well, but I counted him as an experienced and trustworthy source of knowledge, and found him a genuinely friendly and welcoming man. My condolences to the family.

  18. Please accept my condolences on Rick’s passing which I read about in the Globe & Mail. I first met Rick when he was a grad student at U of Toronto. I was a young, new professor who along with Murray Hunt and others ran the DPH program at that time. Rick’s class was relatively large but he and his PEI classmate Bob Romcke — and later, lifelong friend — were the leaders of the class.
That period, the 1970’s, was a golden time for DPH with many new progams underway across Canada. Every year or two the directors of these programs met for discussions and evening social events. Rick always attended these meetings full of ideas and fun.
I am long retired and have not seen Rick for many years but I feel fortunate to have known him as a colleague and friend. He was a very decent and talented man.
Again, my regards for your loss.
