November 12, 1948 – December 1, 2011
It is with a great sense of loss and sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend Kathleen Dobson on Thursday, December 1, 2011. Kathleen passed away after a long courageous battle with breast cancer, with her cherished friends Saro Bunting and Gord Dobson at her side.
Kathleen will forever be remembered lovingly for her wisdom, love of reading and dedication to improving the lives of homeless cats, and will be greatly missed. The world is a richer place for those who had the great fortune to know her.
Kathleen was born in Lethbridge, AB on November 12, 1948, but was raised in Didsbury, AB. After graduating from High School, and a brief stint in retail banking, Kathleen moved to Calgary, where she began a successful career in accounting with Gibson Petroleum. Kathleen earned her CGA designation in 1980, and eventually became the Treasurer at Gibson, before taking early retirement in 1993.
In the mid 80’s Kathleen began volunteering with the PALS program, taking pets to seniors facilities for the enjoyment of the residents. Since she didn’t have her own pets at the time, she “borrowed” two cats from the Humane Society. She subsequently adopted both cats, and began a long history of working with cat welfare groups. In 2000, she was one of the ten founders of the MEOW Foundation, a homeless cat rescue group, and faithfully served in many important capacities with MEOW subsequently.
Kathleen is survived by her brother Richard (Leanne) Shannon, and her niece Rachel (Andrew) Zollinger and their children Sam and Maren, and her nephew Mark Shannon. She is also survived by many cousins, their children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father Donald Shannon in 1982, and her mother Lois E. Shannon in March 2010.
At Kathleen’s request, there will be no memorial service. Her friends will bid her farewell in a small private gathering. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to MEOW Foundation Box 65024, RPO North Hill Calgary, AB T2N 4T6 Phone: 403.230.6033 (Voice Mail System) Fax: 1.866.345.0042
