DIEMERT, Elsie (nee Kowalchuk)

Elsie Diemert passed away peacefully and went to heaven on Monday April 30, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Elsie was born in Mapova, Alberta and raised on a farm north of Thorhild, Alberta. She grew up with humble beginnings on the farm; however there were many happy memories of fun and games with her siblings and picking every kind of berry you could enjoy. The best years of her life were being a mother raising her loving sons Brent and Bruce claiming that motherhood was more than she ever expected. She was a dedicated sports mom driving her kids to endless practices and games. She loved recounting stories of adventure with her young boys and how they were like ‘three peas in a pod’. Elsie was an independent woman and a strong advocate of hard work, education and a believer of ‘always doing the right thing’ and never taking the easy way out. Elsie was one of the original working moms and enjoyed her many years at Western Gas Marketing (TransCanada). Her tireless work ethic earned her numerous promotions. She considered education a privilege and attended a number of universities receiving several diplomas and her Bachelor of General Studies. Forever a tomboy, she loved sports, being outdoors, running, gardening and playing with her animals. Elsie was active in her retirement. She joined the TransCanada choir and enjoyed performing at company events; remained an active member of her church; was an avid reader and visitor of the library and enjoyed time with her beloved grand-children.

She will be dearly missed by her sons Brent (Laura), and Bruce (Elayna), grandchildren Ryan, Cole, Tess, Sarah, and Livia, her sisters Margaret, Doreen, Maureen, Kathleen, Pauline and Diane and brother Billy. Elsie was predeceased by her parents John and Annie Kowalchuk and brothers Fred and Peter.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through

I was fortunate enough to work with Elsie at WGML in the mid/late 1980’s. I was a Contracts Analyst and Elsie would always help me find contracts in the Library and would explain the intricacies of each type of which there were many. She was so patient and knowledgable and dedicated, with a very sweet disposition,…a real pleasure to be around. Her son Brent and I became very close friends at that time , so I have had Elsie updates ever since,…about how much she enjoyed hang with her kids and grand kids,…I admire that she always had such an intense zest for life and learning. My thoughts are with all of Elsies family at this difficult time, thankfully, she left us with many good memories to hang on to.

Brent & Laura, Bruce & family – So very sorry for your loss. Way too soon for Elsie, someone who lived the healthiest lifestyle of anyone I know. I have great memories of working side by side with Elsie in the ’80s & knowing her ever since. What a kind lady. Glad I saw her a short time ago and will treasure the look on her face when she saw me, touched my face & said with such happiness “Kay Webb!” It was a great visit and many laughs. She was a proud lady and rightly so.

I know this has been so crappy 🙁 Brent & Laura, Bruce & Elayna and the amazing grandkids, we too will miss “Gramma” Elsie. She has always been so attentive and interested in our stories and so proud to tell me all about yours when we did have a chance to visit. I loved her bright, warm smiles and honesty the most. How fortunate you are to have had such a WONDERFUL and devoted mom & gramma. I’m thankful she is now at peace,… and tending to all of the furry & feathered friends that she took such care of. Those leftovers & the darn squirrels & birds 🙂 With love & hugs,.. from Chris & The Goof Troup

So very sad to hear of your Mom’s passing. I have so very many memories of the times that we had while we worked together at PanCanadian. Since then I have always had such a special bond with her talking about our kitties, school, current events and her progress since she was injured so badly. She called one day and we went to see the Queen together. I love her as she was so special to me.

Love and light. Alana
