DIAL, Spencer Terence

July 18, 1997 – Calgary, Alberta
March 4, 2018 – Adelaide, Australia

Spencer embraced life with intelligence and a sensational wit. He was an honest, enthusiastic participant and often mischievous. Spencer was musical, poetic, academically inclined and generous with his heart and time. He liked to party and was creative in his costuming. Proudly opinionated, he led the charge to expanding everybody’s comfort zone. He challenged us to all to defend our beliefs on a regular basis. The fun was in the conversation and irreverent debate. He cherished his dear friends and treasured all his friends.

Spencer stalwartly loved his family near and far, old and young alike. He and his brother Connor covered the spectrum of ideals and drew strength and clarity from the others’ usually tangential perspective. The Kavanagh’s, Dial’s, Lesack’s, Mannas’ and Thygesen’s were all proudly his clan to be celebrated and gathered in both good times and bad.

We don’t know why he’s gone. It is a stunning loss. As we move forward we’ll all have his continuing presence in our hearts and commentary in our minds. To honour him, stay close, stay loyal and exercise your opinions as this is life uncensored and the point is to be your best self.

In lieu of flowers or charitable donations Spencer’s family wishes you to do something active and often for your peace of mind.

His funeral will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Stories, photos and condolences may be emailed to stdialstories@gmail.com or forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Spencer Dial, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E. Calgary, AB, T2Z 4E6 Telephone: 403-243-8200.

We are Maddy’s parent. We are so very sorry for you loss that words cannot express our deepest sympathy.

We wanted to let you know that, although we only met Spencer last Thanksgiving, the influence of his caring, charismatic and uniquely entertaining personality was demonstrated, not only in his wonderful toast he gave at dinner, but also in the special bond he has with each of the group of friends Maddy is so thankful to be a part of. It is who Spencer is that the kids will forever carry with them and for which you must both be so proud.

  47. Joanne, Dave and Connor,
We cannot take your pain away but we hope you will find solace in your memories of Spencer. Although our paths crossed only briefly – in hockey and in rugby, your family had an overwhelming sense of strength that I have never encountered before. I hope you can draw on that to find a new path forward. As a parent, I wish you days, weeks, months, years ahead, of peace.
Tyler also sends his love and thoughts to your family. The ‘band’ didn’t last long but your son made an indelible impression on him and he too feels so much grief for his friend.
I know it is long shot, but if you ever need anything at all, we are here for you in whatever way we can be.
    Love, Lorrie and Tyler Keon
