DESIREAU, Howie John

August 9, 1929 – Nelson, BC
August 5, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Howie Desireau, beloved husband of Hester Ann Desireau (Lawrence) of Calgary, passed away peacefully after a twenty-five year battle with cancer on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the age of 83 years.

Howie is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Hester to whom he was married to for sixty-three years; sons Howie (Janet) and Dean; and grandchildren, Marcus, Carmela, Sword and Jewel. He was predeceased by his grandson Stone.

Howie worked his entire professional career in the drafting department at Gulf Oil in Calgary, and retired as the Chief Draftsman after forty years of service. He loved the outdoors, and was a renowned cartridge collector, year round fisherman, hunter and conservationist.

His passion for the outdoors led him to become a co-founder of the Alberta Arms and Cartridge Collectors Association (AACCA) in 1962 to bring people together with an interest in arms, cartridges, militaria, and related artifacts. This organization continues to thrive and will live on to help others share similar passions.

A Celebration of Howie’s life will be held in a private ceremony with family. Forward condolences through the website: If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, Telephone: (403) 955-8818. Howie’s family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Wilkin for his years of excellent medical support.

In living memory of Howie Desireau, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Richard Walker :

I will always remember the warmth and charm Howie showed towards me and our family. His generosity in letting us stay with them in Calgary and Fairmont was truly appreciated. I appreciated the lessons on cartridges and the time he spent with my children on the dock and in the boat showing them the fun of fishing. Golf ball hunting and taking pictures of eagles are memories that will always be with me. The Lord has welcomed him with open arms and we will pray for the Desireau family at this time.
With much thought, love and prayer.

  2. Teresa LaRocque-Walker :

Uncle Howie and Auntie Hester have always been significant people in my life. From when I was tiny and our families met and camped, to my life as a adult when they were a loving support to my family and myself. Dear Uncle Howie was a generous, loving man, whose love of nature brought to each of us a sense of peace and wonder. I have fond memories of our stays in Calgary, and at Fairmont, where my kids first learned to “fish” for golf balls (boy were they good at that!), and to watch bald eagles swoop in for the fish Uncle Howie left for them. We will all greatly miss this sweet man, and our thoughts and prayers will be with Auntie Hester and her family at this time. Thank you so much for all the sweet memories, Teresa

Our thoughts are with you and the family. We did have some great times together. Our kids remember all those times on the river. He is no longer with us but will always be looking out for us in the great outdoors.

To Howie’s family: I am so sorry to learn of Howie’s death. He was always so kind to me when I felt like a “fish out of water” during my days in Calgary. Howie helped me believe that I had something to offer, and places to go, when I felt at a loss. Best wishes to you all from

    Theresa Metzger (Barber)
