DERWEE, Wanda

March 24, 1946 – December 29, 2011

Wanda Derwee passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29th, 2011 surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her dedicated, loving husband of 47 years, Frank, her daughters Cynthia (Rob), Christina (Shane), her grandchildren, Justin, Lily and Jade, her sister, Wendy Norbeck and her sister-in-law Joyce Derwee. Predeceased by loving parents, Wesley Luey (1991) and Mildred Luey (2010).

Wanda was born on March 24th, 1946 in Vancouver, BC. She spent her younger childhood in Vancouver and then in Chatham, ON with her parents owning a grocery store. In 1957 Wanda and her family moved to Calgary to start up a family business of drycleaner locations. Wanda worked at the Westinghouse company, Alberta Gas Trunkline Corp. and moved onto become a commercial real estate agent later in her career. She met and kept many good friends throughout her career.

Wanda has volunteered in many areas such as brownie leader, quilting teacher, and golf organizer. Member of the Silver Springs Golf Club since 1976, Wanda served in an executive position in the ladies section and volunteered her time to a sport she truly loved. During the winter months, Wanda organized a group of ladies at the Silver Springs Golf Club (named stitch & bitch) to make quilts, mitts, hats and blankets to donate to charities such as CUPS, Mustard Seed, The Deane House, etc over the years. A devoted quilter, Wanda worked and taught at the Freckles Quilt Shop for over ten years. Wanda’s family and friends have many of her beautifully made quilting projects to treasure for generations.

Thank you so very much to Mrs. Jane Rivest and staff at the ALS society of Alberta, Dr. Vanda Phillips, Dr. Murphy, Dr. Field, Dr. Geremia and the staff at unit 61 of the Foothills Hospital for making Wanda’s last days of fighting ALS as comfortable and peaceful as possible. Wanda’s family requests that if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the A.L.S. Society of Alberta & Northwest Territories (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Suite 250, 4723 – 1 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2G 4Y8, www.alsab.ca .

It was Wanda’s wish that there be no funeral services. In place of a funeral there will be a Celebration of Life gathering at the Silver Springs Golf Club (1600 Varsity Estates Drive N.W.) on Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 at 11:00 am. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Wanda Derwee, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

Frank, I was sorry to read about the recent passing of your wife. The age I am getting I regularly read the obituaries and I recognize far too many names. I understand what you are going through at this time as my Mom passed away December 22 and we just had her funeral January 4. My thoughts are with you.

    Dear Frank, Cindy and Chrissy,

I am deeply sorry to learn of Wanda’s passing. I have been aware of her illness and have had her in my thoughts and prayers during her struggle.

Wanda will be remembered as a sweet, caring, generous lady. She was so talented with her impressive handwork dating back to her early crafts before she began her quilting. She’ll be fondly missed by the friends she grew up with when they participated together in the activities of the Chinese United Church. She was dearly loved by her Auntie Helen and her family as well as other members of her extended family.

May God comfort you and warm your hearts with loving memories of your dear wife and mother.

    With deepest sympathy,

    Bertha Wen

I am deeply saddened to hear about Wanda’s passing and extend my sympathy to you all. I fondly remember Wanda as that person who gave me a chance in my early career days with AGTL and I could always count on her as an honest and genuine co-worker and mentor who was so positive, thoughtful, generous and sincere in her words and actions. Though the years passed I have never forgotten her kindness and intuitive (and funloving!) nature in our days together at the office, and treasure those times. She just radiated light and love. I am thinking about you all and hold you in my prayers. Jean Hergert

Frank, I was so sorry to read of the passing of Wanda, she was far to young to leave us. My condolences to not only your family Frank but also to the Luey family. Wanda was always a bright spark and a little impish when the mode struck her. I still have a pair of heavy wool socks with a garish red trim, tassel and in red the word “Express” stitched in at the top. We were working on the MacKenzie Pipeline dream at the time and she thought I’d need something warm on my tootsies if I ever had to go up north, she had a great sense of humour.

  14. Isabelle Jankovic :

I am saddened to learn that Wanda has passed away. A very talented and creative person has left us and I extend my deepest sympathy to all your family. We met through Freckles Quilt Shop. I took several classes from her and I learned so much from her. Wanda was always very generous with her time and her talents. She helped me create a beautiful quilted jacket for my mother’s 75th birthday which my mother treasures. I loved Wanda’s creativity and her fabulous sense of colour. Wanda. I needed 32 fabrics for this jacket and Wanda just started pulling bolts off the wall. Her choices were perfect. She always knew just the perfect fabric to complete a project and I missed her when she left the store.
