January 3, 1923 – Verulam County, ON
August 21, 2014 – Calgary, AB
Florence’s only daughter Beverley is sad to announce the death of her mother on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the age of 91 years.
Florence was born in Verulam County, and grew up in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. After graduating high school she moved to Peterborough to work for the war effort. She became an inspector at General Electric working with Lancaster Bombers while living on creamed sardines available from the ration book. She moved to Toronto after the war and worked at Colgate Palmolive, until she married her husband Harvey DeRusha in 1951.
Florence was a strong independent woman, and much ahead of her time. She was so disappointed the laws allowed her to be laid off once she was married, as obviously she no longer needed a job now that she had a husband! Florence became a widow in 1969, but continued to live a full and active life, managing her jobs, her home and her cottage at Six Mile Lake. In 2001 she moved cross country to Calgary to spend time with her daughter. The past 13 years were joyful, with trips to London, Paris, and Las Vegas; cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, the Pacific Northwest and a Christmas Mexican cruise; local trips to Banff and Jasper for sightseeing; Edmonton for shopping and Kelowna for wine tasting with good meals in all those places. Sunday evening dinners with Mom and daughter became a wonderful tradition in the last few years and her cooking skills and adventurousness still shone through.
Just as she missed her parents Jennie Tiers (1981) and Walter Tiers (1965); brother Ross Tiers (1993) and his wife Irene Mark Tiers (1997) and her special cousin David “Nipper” Fell (2002), Florence will be missed by her daughter Beverley; nephew Mark (Kathie) Tiers; niece Arleigh (Robert) Sawyer; Doris Fell and her sons Stephen Fell and James Fell; and Luella Stiner and her daughter Janice (Ron) Lanneger and son Rick Stiner. All her friends and family in Ontario and Calgary will miss her love, her guidance and her shining example of being a kind and “gentlewoman”.
A Private Family Service will be held in Toronto at a later date. In lieu of flowers please hug your mother and friends and tell them you love them. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
