It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Frances Dennis (nee Macdonell) on February 16, 2014, at the age of 90 in Calgary, Alberta.
She was predeceased by her son Bill in 2005 and her husband Bill in 2007. She is greatly mourned by her loving daughter Anita, brother Harry Macdonell (Barbara), niece Nicole Wright (Tim), nephews Ian (Brenda) and Winsor (Erin) and great nieces Madeleine, Kiara and Claire and great nephews Cody, Kyle, Aidan and Ross.
Frances was born in Toronto and brought up in Chatham, Sudbury and Huntsville. She went to boarding school in Barrie, Ontario and then went to Queen’s University, Kingston where she graduated with a BA in History and Politics in 1944. Her first journalism position was with the Sudbury Star and then she joined the Ottawa Journal as a reporter. In Ottawa she met Bill and after a whirlwind courtship of three weeks got married in January 1946 and sailed from Halifax for England on a cargo boat hauling bananas. They set up home in the UK and she moved to Reuters in 1946. After the kids were grown she returned to work at the International Planned Parenthood Federation in 1960 as Director of Information and subsequently was consultant to the International Union for Conservation and Nature.
Since retiring to Calgary in 1997 Frances volunteered at the Kerby News both proofreading and writing articles as well as writing some freelance pieces for the Globe and Mail. Frances was independent, feisty, brave, cheerful and strong with a great sense of humour and led a colourful and amazing life. She helped to lead the way to a more modern world of opportunities for women. She enjoyed canoeing, camping, skiing, and gardening and her ‘picturesque routes’ led her family on many grand travel adventures.
