June 1, 1917 – Cactus Lake, SK
December 10, 2013 – High River, AB
Peter Degenstein of Calgary, passed away peacefully at High River Hospital on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at the age of 96 years.
Born in Cactus Lake, SK, he had many fond memories of growing up in a large family on the prairies. Although he didn’t speak of it often, he served his country proudly in the Canadian Air Force during WWII. He spent most of his adult life as a very successful salesman, most notably with Inglis Appliances. This was a profession that afforded him the flexible schedule to pursue one of his real passions; golf. He truly believed that being fit and active cured all that ails and lived this belief his entire life. He kept his mind sharp with crosswords, cribbage and enjoying the daily paper. Throughout his life, he was active in many associations including the Calgary Stampede Queen Committee, the Race Committee, as well as a Parade Marshall. In his retirement, he took to selling sport pins, going to pin shows and making many friends in the process. Peter took great pleasure in betting on both horses and cards, and found some success in both areas over the years. We will miss hearing about the big wins on his $2 bets!
Peter is survived by his devoted wife Shirley of twenty-seven years. He will be fondly remembered by his children, Karen Ballantyne, Candace Degenstein, and Peter Degenstein (Lisa); daughter-in-law Debbie Degenstein; step-sons, Cameron and Rob McDonald; grandchildren, Robyn, Kimberley, Michael, Jessica, Nicole, Jansen and Levi; and his siblings Betty Sealey (Don) and Jackie (Betty) Degenstein. He was predeceased by his son Keith and siblings, Frank, Tony, Barbara, Joe, Kay, Gabe, Martz, Leo and Judy.
