DeFRAINE, Ellen Marie Anne (nee McCarthy)

Ellen DeFraine of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the age of 89 years.

Ellen was born in Calgary. She attended St. Mary’s Girls School, graduating in 1946. She then took her nurses training at Holy Cross Hospital and received her RN in 1949, the same year that she met Grant DeFraine. They were married August 19, 1950 and raised five children. In 1978, Ellen and Grant sold the family home in Calgary and moved to Ma-Me-O Beach, which was the summer vacation home while the children were growing up. In 1982 Ellen took an RN refresher course and became a Home Care Nurse, until retirement in 1995. Ellen moved back to Calgary in 1996 and lived on her own until her passing. She enjoyed cooking, travelling, spending time with family and especially playing cards.

Ellen is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jim Pearson, Christina DeFraine and Don Sawchuk, Peggy-Jo and Tod Brooks; son and daughter-in-law Bill and Laura DeFraine; daughter-in-law Karen DeFraine; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her siblings, Theresa (George) Battye, Beatrice (Bernard) Cissell, Dennis (Bonnie) McCarthy and Philip (Sigrun) McCarthy; sister-in-law Gene McCarthy, and also numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Grant DeFraine in 1991; son Jerry DeFraine in 2012; siblings, Catherine Schmaltz, Henrietta McCarthy, Peggy (Reg) Clarkson, Pat McCarthy, Frances Wright, Michael (Dolores) McCarthy and Bernard (Pauline) McCarthy.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue S.W. Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.     I’ve never been so accepted by someone as I have by Ellen. A golden heart and platinum soul is what this lady wore on her sleeve. I can see that in her children as well. I’ve always had something to learn from Ellen, and have been blessed to meet her through Bill. I wish I could have chatted with her more recently in her oh so perfect apartment. My most sincere condolences to her family, she will be missed by many.
