de CROM – Wilhelmina Maria “Wilma” (nee van der Weijst )

February 3, 1926 – July 14, 2011

Wilma passed away at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband Peter de Crom on April 17, 2009.

Wilhelmina was born in Bergeijk, Netherlands and immigrated with Peter and her eldest two children in 1953 to Crossfield, later moving to Calgary and Springbank where they remained for the rest of their lives. She raised her seven children as well as caring for thirty-four foster children over many years. She worked hard on the farm, growing her own vegetables, baking bread and cooking for so many. There was always room for a few more … drop-ins welcomed. She was strong, proud, giving, honest, humble, stubborn, really Dutch and so very funny. Wilma was a proud lifelong member of the CWL. She and Peter had many friends from their many years in Shepherd and their membership at the Springbank Heritage Club created a wonderful community of friends for them later in life.

Wilma is remembered with love by her seven children, Maria de Crom, Johanna (Dave) Thompson, Frank (Michelle) de Crom, Betty (Theo) Jacobs, Ted (Kate) de Crom, Theresa (Kees) de Waal, and Audrey (Matthew) Takoski. She also leaves behind sixteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her parents and four siblings in Holland.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Lodge at Valley Ridge for the extra loving care they gave our parents as well as our amazing sister Johanna and her husband Dave for taking Mom into their home and providing her with such loving care for the last months of her life. We also thank God for sending Caridad to help us with such compassion at the end. Also big thank you to The Cochrane home care nursing team, who were such a great support.    If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Easter Seals Alberta, 103, 811 Manning Road N.E., Calgary AB T2E 7L4 Telephone: 403-235-5662.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Community Church, 800 – 85 Street S.W. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Wilhelmina de Crom, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

Dear de Crom children and Grandchildren,
We just received the news about the passing of your mother and oma at our place in BC. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in this difficult time. We will remember your mom as the straightforward Dutch woman she was residing in Canada putting a stamp on so many people, being kids, grandkids, foster children and friends.
Sorry, we won’t be able to make it back to Calgary in time for the funeral tomorrow. All the best in these difficult days.
    Hans and Ellen

Betty, you mentioned your mom quite often about the foster children that she took in and how much love she had for everyone. The world and your family will be short that person now. My thoughts are with you.

  7. Veldhoen Family :

    Dear Decrom Family,
We have such good memories of your family and ours working and playing together at the farm near Calgary. Your Mother and Father always had room for one more family for a visit and little one that needed a home and a big family to belong to. Our thoughts are with all of you today when you gather to honour your Mother and hope you will be in touch.

  9. Catherine Barroll :

    Dear Betty, Theo, and Family,

Thinking of you as you say good-bye to your Mom. Reading her obituary, I thought what a remarkably powerful and active life she had, and how many peoples’ lives she touched…. her strength, warmth and humour will be her legacy to you forever, living on in the hearts and the lives of her wonderful children, and their sons and daughters in turn. I hope you celebrate her life with pride and love, and not sorrow.
    Love , Catherine Barroll

  10. Sylvia Theriault (nee Vlooswyk) :

To the DeCrom Family: I am very sorry about your Mom’s passing. I remember going to your house just off of Glenmore Trail. I would go with my Dad and play in the yard with whoever was home, while my Dad visited. My parents would have come to your Mom’s funeral, but they did not hear about it until afterwards. The Vlooswyk Family offers their condolences. Sincerely, Sylvia
