de CHAMPLAIN, Annette Corrine

August 4, 1924 – Rockyford, AB
August 31, 2013 – Calgary, AB

With sadness we say good bye to Annette, a beautiful mother, aunt, grandmother, sister and friend.

Living a full and rich life of 89 years, Annette will be remembered for her steadfast love of family, and her many life long friends, a love of travel that she shared many times with her sister Sue, and her generous and courageous spirit. Annette was the third eldest of nine children, born in Rockyford, AB to the late Leon and Gertrude Plotkins. She is survived by three brothers and three sisters; Leon (Alice), Robert (Alice), Pierre, Suzanne Butler, Lucille (Antoine) Panet-Raymond, Marie and was predeceased by her brother Philip and her sister Evangeline. Annette met her late husband Paul after attending Normal School and teaching in Legal, Ab. Their marriage in 1947 brought a wonderful legacy of five children; Bob (Judy), Paul (Dianne), Rick (Sheri), Guy (Dianna) and Suzanne, as well as thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mom loved and cherished her family and took great pride in everyone. Her strong sense of right and wrong guided her in her family endeavors. As a teacher for many years with the Calgary Separate School Board, Annette helped pioneer the French Immersion Program. She had a great love of teaching and was loved by her students. She was especially happy and proud to attend the University of Calgary, at the age of 45 and at the same time as her two eldest sons, while she completed her bachelor of Education degree. Annette had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of several choirs including a French-Canadian choir and the 1988 Winter Olympics Choir. Her “joie de vivre”, her sense of style, a “classy lady” is how many will remember Annette.

Condolence Messages

  1. I felt privileged to be allowed to call Annette De Champlain an Aunt even though she was really my cousins Aunt. My parents, Wilf and Yvonne, moved to Calgary in 1969 with my sisters and my self, and we were made welcome by the de Champlain family. Aunty Annette’s hospitality and her joy made the time special. I especially remember the Bar-B-Q’s and her Onion Soup Bread which she taught me to make. This has become one of my own family’s favourites and provides an opportunity to tell all about my Aunt. Please accept my condolences.

  2. I am saddened to hear about the passing of Annette. I taught with her in the early 1970’s at St. Bernard and St. Charles School as part of the French Immersion program of the Calgary Catholic School Board. She taught grade 2 while I taught grade 3. She was a very caring teacher and had a wonderful sense of humour. She was generous in sharing her ideas as an experienced educator. My condolences go out to her family.

  3. Rolande Hurtubise Edmonton :

Annette and her sister, Susan, and I spent our junior and high-school years at Sacred Heart Convent in Legal, AB. We had many tales to recount of those memories in later years in Arizona. Annette, with her beautiful singing voice, will surely be singing with the choir of angels. Sympathy to the family is also extended by Therese Coulombe Leblanc.

  7. Dear Mme DeChamplain Family
Mme DeChamplain was my grade one teacher at St Luke’s in the 70s. She became a family friend over the years. Each Christmas I am reminded of her beautiful way with the little brass ornament engraved from her that I still cherish 35 years later. Living overseas for the past 15 years ( now in Australia ) I was fortunate enough to see her on my home visits and she met my young family. Forever MMe DeChamplain, always insisting I speak French to her, I will remember always as such a special part of my life. I only hope my children can have such an amazing caring teacher as a part of their primary years. Aurevoir Mme we are so fortunate to have had you in our lives. xoxoxo Bridget Wouts
