March 10, 1928 – San Foca, Italy
July 21, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of dear Gino. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the age of 85.
Gino was born on March 10, 1928. He was one of six children born to Maria and Ambrose De Bortoli in the village of San Foca, province of Pordenone, Italy.
Gino is survived by his dear wife of forty-two years Ann Pelletier, and his brother Elio (Ester) of Ottawa, Ontario, sister in law Danilla (wife of Egidio); and brother in law Luigi Turrin (husband to Celestina), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Giuseppe and Egidio: and two sisters, Celestina and Elsa, all from the province of Pordenone, Italy.
Gino had fond memories of his life in Italy. He was very proud of his heritage and the large family he came from. Gino moved to Canada when he was about twenty-five and worked as a carpenter in Ottawa, Ontario. He married Valeria and they had two daughters, Mirella and Yori. Some years later he married Grace and they had a son Brian. In 1971 he met Ann and they shared a life together until Gino’s passing. Gino and Ann moved to Calgary in 1976 and bought a house which Gino enjoyed fixing up.
Gino loved sports, big band music, dancing, wine making but most of all, he loved people. When he retired he joined the Seniors’ Club at Our Lady of Grace Italian Church and the Calgary Italian Club where he played and later watched bocce. Almost every day Gino went to the Sanremo Social Club to be with his friends and watch them play cards. Ann accompanied him this last year and a half and they enjoyed cappuccinos together.
