DAY, William “Bill” Arnott

May 5, 1942 – Winnipeg, MB
October 8, 2014 – Calgary, AB

We mourn the loss of Bill Day, loving husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, and friend to many.

Bill was raised in Winnipeg and went to the University of Manitoba where he earned an agriculture degree, got his teaching certificate and met the love of his life. Bill and Michele built a beautiful life together raising a family, having a career and then spending their retirement traveling and visiting friends and family.

Bill will be remembered by most as a patient and caring educator. A lifelong educator, his professional career started in Frobisher Bay, NWT where he taught for five years. Bill spent the rest of his professional teaching career in the Foothills School Division where he found his calling. Bill felt honoured and rewarded to have touched and helped shape so many lives through education. After retirement, Bill spent his time on a new job reminding us all that “Grandpa’s job is being silly”.

Bill’s devotion to his family was his greatest gift and his greatest strength. He strived to keep his family happy, loved, and supported. His favourite family tradition was spending summers at the family cabin, a place he had loved since childhood. He poured his heart into building a place where friends and family could relax and have fun.

Bill’s primary home was in Calgary but he also had a cabin in Ontario and a winter home in Texas. Bill made friends everywhere he went and will leave many happy memories with those that knew him. Bill will truly be missed by many.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years Michele, by his daughter and her family: Carmen, Calvin, Maranda, and Marty, by his son and his family: Alex, Katie, and Berenger, by his mother Dorothy, his brother and his family: Murray, Susan, Deleah, and Duncan; his niece Gail and her fiancé Todd; by his brother-in-law Ward, and by a vast number of step-brothers and sisters and their families; and his Australian daughter and her family: Christina, Andrew, Isabel and Ben. Bill was predeceased by his sister Janice, his father Arnott, and his step-father Jim.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at Marda Loop Community Association (3130 – 16 Street S.W.) on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. This will be a potluck event as Bill loved a good potluck. Plenty of food will be available if you are unable to bring anything other yourselves. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222, www.albertacancer.ca/memorial or to Matoto Multicultural Arts Society, 4028 Raymond Street N. Hi Michele,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Bill and I taught in the dusty upstairs of the “coral building” while Joe Clark School was being built. It was his great sense of humor and wit that kept us going in that dusty, noisy setting. Each day as we climbed those rickety, creaking stairs he had a few jokes to get us off on a positive start to the day. Bill was a wonderful, one of a kind guy. Of course the fact that we both had a Winnipeg background just further forged a strong collegial bond. Bless all of you as you go forward with many, many wonderful memories of a man who made a very positive difference in all the lives of so many students, colleagues and friends,

    Michele and family,
Since receiving your e-mail this week, I have spoken about Bill to many of our friends here in Minnesota. Just last night I was telling a neighbor how you and Bill would leave warm Texas and go home to COLD Canada every December to spend time with your kids and grand kids. You left early this past winter to meet up in Wisconsin. These family memories will be cherished forever. Here’s what Dick and I will remember…Bill’s smile, the best made coffee in the Valley and one of the nicest neighbor’s on Granada Street! Carmen and Alex…always remember that a father and grandfather’s love is a special gift that will live forever in all your hearts! We ache for all of you. Hopefully your happy memories will bring you sunshine during the dark times ahead.
With sympathy and friendship, our love to all of you,
    Dick and Kay

I’m so sorry for your loss. I have so many pleasant memories from my time in Manitoba with you and when you visited me in Mississauga. Bill told me that he was looking forward to retirement so he could spend more time with you and that he never grew tired of your company. I’ll never forget that sentiment!!! I also remember the car trip to your wedding. We had a lot of fun. I wish you peace, and love. Sincerely Margaret

    Michele & family
We were so surprised by the sudden passing of Bill. We were looking forward to seeing him in Texas, as you said you might be able to come for a short visit. We will greatly miss our poolside chats, coffee etc.
Here is a poem that I like , that seems appropriate

God looked around his garden and He found an empty place.
He then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face .
He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best
He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, ” peace be thine”
He took you up to heaven with hands gentle and kind.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
Part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

    Michele,

Surprised and saddened by the rapid passing of Bill. I spent a great deal of time with Bill in university, as you know. They were happy times. Although I saw less of Bill since then because of distance, I always felt that we were still kindred spirits and could pick up wherever we left off.
It was great to have you both at the ’69 Agriculture 40th class reunion in Winnipeg and our occasional rendezvous in the Kenora area.

    We will miss him greatly.
    Love Bill and Fran Anderson

  22. Michele Day and Family,
Rita and I are saddened by Bill’s passing! We pray for God’s peace, understanding and comfort for you, as you mourn the loss of your beloved! It was a privilege to have taught school with Bill at Turner Valley and Joe Clark. He was always gentle, kind, thoughtful and respectful with his colleagues and students. He had contributed greatly toward the learning of English among ESL students, whose parents he had also befriended socially.
Rita and I still remember the warm Christmas Party you and Bill had so graciously hosted for the Turner Valley staff at your beautiful acreage home near Okotoks. Take care and God bless!

    Michele:
I was greatly saddened to learn of Bill’s passing away. I have so many fond memories from time we were together as “69” Aggies at U of M. While I saw little of you and Bill since 1969, our laughter-filled evening together at Eagle Lake a few years ago showed how close a bond we had developed during our Aggie days. My condolences to you and your family.

    Michele and family,
It is with great sadness that we have heard of Bill’s passing. With his inimitable smile and outlook on life he was always fun to be around. Who was Bill? Friend, mentor, coach, teacher, leader and all-around great guy!!! Always positive about life. Who can forget the parties almost every weekend at 44 Arlington. And Bill could debate with the best and win. His design of the sixty-niner T-shirt was indeed brilliant. The world has lost a truly great guy. Bill will be missed. Love and condolences to you Michele, to Carmen and Alex and their families.

    Michele and family,
We are shocked and saddened by news of Bill’s passing. Even though it has been some time since we visited with him he was never far from our thoughts. We will always remember Bill and his compassionate and thoughtful ways of working with some of the most challenging students in Foothills School Division. When other colleagues were ready to give up on a difficult student Bill would offer a positive approach to working with the individual.
We always enjoyed Bill’s sense of humor, which he brought to our professional and personal conversations.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in these difficult times.

We are so surprised to hear of Bill’s untimely passing. There was never a dull moment working with Bill in the Bronco building in High River while Joe Clark School was being built. We fondly remember one summer when the four of us visited Bill, Michele, Carmen and Alex at their cabin in Kenora…so much laughter and fun! Although Bill and Michelle too, might never have come to quite understand the impact that Bill had on so many of his generation – I too was one of many!

Bill, along with another good friend Bill Anderson, mentered me though my introduction to the outside world. At the very least, it was a “first” that was a real adventure. The 3 of us left UofM classes immediately at the end of 1st week of 3rd yr – and arrived in Montreal for Expo 67. It was truly a life experience in every sense and your Bill was the more worldly of the 3 of us and to him fell the role of a little sheparding of 2 prairie boys. It was a bonding time that I have forever cherished.
Bill and I became sometime partners in a debating league and I was always amazed at the agility of his intellect that drove his mastery of the debate – it was often a marvel to watch!
There was always a celebration of life and friendships that eminated from Bill and made him a friend to all. I am proud to have called him Friend and fellow 69’er …. Ray
