DANYLO, Martha

It is with great sadness that we announce that Martha Danylo of Calgary passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the age of 83 years.

Martha was born on October 7, 1930 in Helenental, Russia (now Ukraine) to German-speaking parents Alwina and Jakob Eichele. Martha was fortunate to have access to excellent schooling, and therefore was able to read and write fluently in Ukrainian, German, Russian, and English. After WWII Martha’s family had the opportunity to start a new life in Canada after being sponsored by relatives from Burstall, Saskatchewan. In 1951 Martha and her family immigrated to Canada and landed at St. John, New Brunswick. She was able to use her many language skills to assist the Canadian government officials in communicating with the new immigrants and earned her first Canadian dollars ($2). She was very proud of this! The family first lived in Medicine Hat and later moved to Calgary.

In 1957, Martha married Steve, and they had four children. She remained in Calgary for the next 56 years, first in Parkdale later moving to Dalhousie and for the last 5 years at the Colonel Belcher and finally to Bowview Manor.

Martha lived her life with passion and was an inspiration to anyone who met her. She enjoyed gardening. She spent hours lovingly tending her flowers, vegetables and fruits, many of which she would turn into preserves. She was an excellent cook and master pie-maker. Any dinner at Martha’s was an event to be remembered! By trade, Martha was an award winning hairstylist, sharing the family business with her husband Steve, who was a barber. She loved to walk in her neighborhood and visit with friends. She was a dedicated parishioner of Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church and drove many of her friends to church on Sunday.

Martha was very well read and enjoyed discussing the news and current events. She also enjoyed watching sports; she liked football, hockey and best of all the Olympics! Her enthusiasm for traveling took her to; Las Vegas, Hawaii, California, London, Paris, Germany, and Bermuda. Most of all Martha enjoyed Banff and Radium. By far her favourite pastime was listening and dancing to many forms of music, especially lively Russian and Ukrainian.

Martha was devoted to her family and will be dearly missed by her children, Diana and husband Barry, Ania and her fiancé Chris, Perry and wife Treena, and Roman and wife Janet; her grandchildren, Brandon, Stefan, Victoria, and Olivia; her brother Edward and wife Lia; and her nephews, Gerd, Derek and James. She was predeceased by her parents and beloved husband Steve in 1980.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (729 – 6th Street N.E.) on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the kind and caring staff of Bowview Manor and Unit 72 of the Rockyview.
