CUNNINGHAM, Lucy Madeline (nee Morton)

October 26, 1906 – May 28, 2012

It is with sorrow but a host of wonderful memories that we mark the passing of Lucy Cunningham. We celebrate the extraordinary 105 year journey in life of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and matriarch.

Lucy was born on the CX Ranch at Rosebud Creek, AB, firstborn to Carmen and Jack Morton. Her education was gained in Gleichen and Calgary and she was awarded the Alberta Governor General’s Award. Lucy attended Normal School and subsequently taught in a number of one room schools in Southern Alberta. Lucy and Raymond Cunningham were married August 2, 1937 and she became a farming wife and partner. They retired to Calgary in 1959 after which Lucy returned to teaching until retirement in 1973.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Cunningham and Kathleen (Lloyd) Gingles; adored grandchildren, Colin (Carmen) Gingles and Nicole (Craig) DeMars; beloved great-grandchildren, David, Beth, Katie and Sadie; sister Frances Leahy and many nieces and nephews. Lucy was predeceased by her husband Raymond; daughter Barbara; sisters, Clare and Charlotte; and brother Allan.

“Say not in grief she is no more but live in thankfulness that she was.”

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Lucy’s honour may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Lucy Cunningham, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.

  4. Rita (Morton) Loughlin and family :

Sharing is what I am most thankful for with my memories. Sharing the happy times on the farm; sharing the wonderful gardens she cultivated, especially the raspberries; sharing the history of the Morton family; sharing me and my family as part of the family reunions; sharing a cup of coffee and time to chat. I am also so thankful that Auntie Lucy always appreciated the visits however few and acknowledged, accepted, and understood that balancing family and work was not easy; she always made me feel at ease about short visits and welcome my children and grandchildren whenever she saw them.

    To Mrs. Cunnungham’s family,
Mrs. Cunningham was my homeroom teacher at St Mary’s Junior High school in Grade Seven… she was a vivid, outspoken, big-hearted lady, and I am not surprised that she was beloved by her family. I remember her with great fondness, and send my condolences for your loss, but as well, my felicitations that you had her with you for so many happy years. Thank you, Mrs. Cunningham! Bless you and yours.

  7. Kerri Wickhorst :

    My condolences on your loss,

I only shared Lucy’s remarkable 105 year journey since November — I’m the hairdresser porter at Bethany where she lived out the end of her journey. She never failed to have a smile when I came to pick her up for her hairdressing appointment on Fridays. I had such tremendous respect for her, and still do — she was amazing, and I know she will remain amazing in the many hearts she has touched over her long journey… God Bless to all, my prayers are with you…
