CRAWFORD – Anne Stewart

Anne Crawford died peacefully at home with her son and daughter by her side on November 13, 2010. Born in Edmonton, AB on February 4, 1942, Anne moved to Calgary as a youngster when her father, George Crawford, returned from overseas service with the Navy. George and Anne’s mother Sheila were active community members during Calgary’s heyday of the fifties and sixties and Anne grew up surrounded by a wonderful circle of family friends whom remained a part of her life throughout. In order to pursue Anne’s love of horses and that of her three sisters, Anne’s family kept a country home in Pump Hill and later in Priddis. The Priddis home became Anne’s parents’ principal residence for more than forty years and the centre of many fond family memories. A piece of that Priddis land – Anne’s sanctuary – was forever the love of her life.
Anne graduated from UBC (Hon. Degree, Philosophy) in 1963 and soon after traveled to Europe where she met Norwegian Anders Saether. The two married and raised two children in Sweden and Norway during which time Anne also earned a Political Science Degree from Stockholm University. Anne returned to Canada with her two children in 1985. For more than fifteen years Anne enjoyed a career at the Calgary Herald as a journalist, many of those years as a business reporter, before pursuing a second career as an independent media relations advisor with a particular passion for the preservation of the beautiful grasslands in Southern Alberta.

She is survived by mother, Sheila, son Ragnar (Dana), daughter, Katharine (Leon), and sisters Sally, Eve, and Erica (Marc). Anne is also survived by grandchildren Lukas, Cynthia, Elias, Alexandra and baby-to-be. Anne was predeceased by father George.
Anne’s wit, elegance and no-nonsense attitude towards life will be dearly missed by everyone whose lives she touched. There’s a warm ray of sunshine that will forever light up the Valley of Priddis.
The family wishes to thank all of the nursing staff who cared for Anne, Dr. Scot Dowden and her many friends. We especially wish to thank Kitty Pryde, whose unconditional love and support through Anne’s difficult journey this past year surpassed all that we could have hoped for.

In celebration of Anne’s life a memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 3602-8 St. S.W., Calgary, AB. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Calgary Foundation (700, 999 8th Street S.W. Calgary, AB T2R 1J5 email: www.thecalgaryfoundation.org Phone: 403-802-7700)

In living memory of Anne Crawford, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Condolence Messages

  1. Anne was truly one of a kind. My fondest memories are of Anne and I working together at Venture. We often came out of meetings together and it took but seconds to get Anne’s opinion on the meeting, the people or the banality of the project – I always laughed at her quick and pointed comments. I loved working with her and she will be missed dearly by anyone that had the privilege of meeting her.

  3. For many years, I had the pleasure of working with Anne at Venture Communications. Anne was my mentor, friend, trusted colleague and advisor on work and life issues. I deeply admired her wisdom, straight-shooter style of communicating and most of all, her tender heart. She spoke often of her kids and was over the moon to become a grandmother. I am deeply honoured to have known Anne and to call her my friend. I will miss her and send my condolences to her family. What an amazing lady who leaves such a wonderful legacy.

  9. I was fortunate enough to share an office with Anne while I was at Venture. We had so many laughs and talked often about her children and grandchildren. Anne, I will miss your smile and the laughs we shared, I will especially miss the way you used to tease me about being too noisy. My condolences go out to all of your family.

  11. Last night, I drove by Anne’s Priddis paradise, the snow shadows blue under a silver moon. I drive by most days, but this time, there was a certain peace to this special spot. It will always be “Anne’s Place”.
You walked tall, thought tall, and touched everyone you met with your honesty and sincerity. Whether it be in a boardroom or in a cattleman’s pasture.
Our days at the Herald are a distant past; I choose to remember you in the Priddis Valley, where we both found reprieve from the craziness of it all.
Here, your soul truly rests in peace, Anne.
    Your retreat lives on, forever.
May your memory always be bathed in sunlight, and moonlight.
    Wendy

  12. Since I have been fortunate enough to know Anne through her work at the Herald and socially through our informal “Friends of Friday” group, she has always been a breath of fresh air and a ray of sunshine when she entered the room. Anne remembered everyone and took time to speak with all our friends. She will be missed by all of us.
