CRATCHLEY, Marion Isobel (nee Lyons)

March 5, 1920 – Westlock, AB
March 10, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Marion Isobel Cratchley (nee Lyons) passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the age of 94 years.

Marion was born in Westlock, AB to William and Bella Lyons, the fourth of seven children. She graduated from Westlock High School and moved to Edmonton to pursue her nursing career at the Royal Alexander Hospital. She graduated with the General Proficiency Award in 1942. She nursed for a brief time in rural Alberta before she moved to Powell River, BC in 1945. She nursed at the hospital until she became the first Industrial Health Nurse at the Pulp and Paper Mill. She and her husband started to winter in Palm Springs, CA in the 1960s. Shortly after her arrival in Palm Springs, she was recruited to start her lengthy nursing career at Desert Hospital. Upon her retirement in 1985, she continued to spend her time between Palm Springs and Powell River. In 2006, she relocated to a senior’s residence in Calgary to be closer to her family for support.

Marion had a large extended family and many friends who she kept in contact with until her passing. She will be missed, but has left us with many memories. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, siblings, and many friends.

As per Marion’s wishes, her family will celebrate her life privately at a later date. Please forward condolences through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Marion Cratchley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. CALGARY, AB Telephone: 1-800-661-1599.

Someone as special as Marion will not soon be forgotten. She left us all with many fond memories. To meet her was to love her enthusiasm, and her love of life. She lit up the room, when she walked into it. She was such an important part of our family, we feel privileged that we were able to enjoy her presence.

  3. Don/Donna Tunnacliffe :

Oh Dear Marion – she took us under her wing in Palm Springs many many years ago. We had many a “happy hour” with her and her good friend Gertrude. We stayed in the park at Ramon for many years and once stayed in her unit down there. She gave us grapefruit and tended to our needs in the desert. She played bridge and scrabble with me and we shared many meals during our time there. I am so sorry that it was her time to leave but I know she was not so happy when she was no longer able to look after people as was her role in most of her life. She was the perfect nurse and caregiver for so many during her active years.
Carol and Tom and family – our great sympathy to you all.
    Donna and Don Tunnacliffe
