CRANSTON, Doris-Jean (DJ) (nee Macpherson)

June 13, 1924 – August 26, 2012

As the sun sets after another summers day, it is with saddened hearts that we announce our mom and grandmother peacefully and with grace passed away with family at her side on Sunday, August 26, 2012.

Born in Regina to parents Donald and Minnie Jean Macpherson, DJ was a “Prairie Lassie” at heart with a Scottish heritage she deeply cherished. DJ at a young age graduated from Scott Collegiate High School in Regina, was a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan (1942) Arts and Science, served with the Royal Canadian Navy 1944/45 and graduated from McGill University (1947) Physiotherapy. Mom married Dad in Regina on August 15, 1952 and then after a year in Montreal, moved to Calgary. DJ was a wonderful mother, ‘G-ma’ and friend to all that knew her. She loved a great story and her infectious laugh will be remembered by all. ‘G-ma’ treasured her years at Shuswap Lake with her children and grandchildren. She was a warm, kind and special friend who will be sadly missed. Mom was predeceased by the love of her life, Thomas Russell Cranston in 1989 and will be sadly missed by her two children Donald (Julie), Mairi-Jean Ebbels (Tim) and five grandchildren, TJ, Erin, John, Emily and Billy.

A Celebration of DJ’s life will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. or the charity of your choice. We would like to give thanks to the staff at Staywell Manor and the loving care provided by all at the Sarcee Hospice. A very special thanks goes out to a true comfort provider and friend, Diana.

In living memory of DJ Cranston a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

  4. Rita Poruchny :

My deepest sympathy for your loss. She was such a great support to the educational system. The hours that she supported the students at Mount Royal Junior High were invaluable. With a smile and a great deal of patience she worked with the students.

  5. Becky Lathrop :

    Dear Mairi-Jane and Don,

Your mother will be greatly missed by her friends at Scarboro United — in fact has been missed these last few years. Such a bright and upbeat person despite various trials and tribulations. She loved her family, and I know they loved her.

I regret that a prior commitment prevents me from being at her Memorial Service this afternoon. I will be thinking of all of you today — and in the days to come. Cherish the memories!

    With love,

    Becky Lathrop

I read your Mom’s obit this morning and notified the staff at Discovering Choices. I am so sorry for your loss. The last few years have been a struggle for your Mom and so I’m sure her passing has brought relief. None the less – it is a loss. I’m sure you are grateful for all the wonderful memories shared of your childhood, youth, relationships with your children that many of us have been blessed to have with our parents and in particular our mothers. Their lives have been such a gift. My Mom passed away in Nov 2000 and I think of her everyday. Please accept my sincere sympathy.

  8. Michelle Dertell :

So sorry to you about your Mom’s passing. She lived next door to me for many years in Rideau Towers and was a wonderful neighbor. I attended many tea parties and cocktail parties at your Mom’s place ( and at Libby’s). Also saw your Mom at Garrison when she was there as my Mom is there.
