COX, John William

September 27, 1927 – Pincher Creek, AB
February 28, 2015 – Calgary, AB

John Cox of Calgary passed away on February 28, 2015 at the age of 87 years.

John was born and raised on the family ranch near Pincher Creek. He attended the UofA and obtained his degree in Electrical Engineering. John spent the majority of his career with Schlumberger of Canada and, in the later part of his career, pioneered the Dipmeter logging technology. John met Shirley, the love of his life, while working in Dawson Creek, BC. Because of John’s work they were able to travel the world and enjoyed many trips together. In his spare time John loved to hunt, camp, fish and boat with his family. One of John and Shirley’s passions was building their family cabin on the Ghost River. John was always tinkering in his garage fixing things and could always be counted on for free car repair.

John is survived by his children and their spouses, Jim Cox (Linda Aberdeen), Beverley Cox (Rick Torrens), Rob Cox (Dianne), Kathy Cox (Jim Harasymchuk) and Sue Palardy (Greg); his grandchildren Tyler and Ashley Cox, Megan, Colin and Paul Cox, Ryan and Shawn Harasymchuk, Stephanie and Christina Palardy; his sisters Mary Williams and Dorothy Bernard. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years Shirley Cox (nee Pound) in 2013; and his infant child Joseph.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire donations can be made directly to Parkinson’s research of your choice.
