July 8, 1925 – February 18, 2013
Joy Courtman left us on Monday, February 18, 2013 at the age of 87 years, with her family close by. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Joy was born in Retford, Nottinghamshire, England on July 8, 1925 to Arthur and Elizabeth Dixon. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1926. She grew up in the Ogden area of Calgary. During World War II, she met a dashing RAF airman, Fred Courtman. They were married on July 24, 1943 and were married for nearly fifty-seven years.
Joy had the heart and soul of an artist. As a young woman, she was a very accomplished pianist and organist. Later she worked in the visual arts, painting in oils, acrylics, watercolors, and China painting. Joy enjoyed all types of needlework and sewing. As a volunteer, she made numerous costumes and outfits for the 1988 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies. Joy’s other love was family. She was thrilled at the birth of her grandchildren and then of her great-granddaughter last year. She loved family gatherings and get-togethers.
Joy leaves behind her daughter Linda of Calgary; and her sons, Glenn (Marilynn) of Calgary and Ray (Madeline) of Beiseker, AB. Also mourning her loss are her grandchildren, Amanda (Greg) of Airdrie and Rhys (Dawn); and great-granddaughter Amelia, all of Didsbury. Joy was predeceased by her husband Frederick H. Courtman in 2000; her parents Arthur and Elizabeth Dixon; and her brothers, Harry, Bernard, and Art Dixon.
