COOKE, Veronica Mary

May 5, 1927 – Dublin, Ireland
December 26, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Veronica Cooke passed gently surrounded by loved ones on December 26, 2014, in Calgary, Alberta.

Veronica, or Vera, as she was known, was the daughter of John and Ann Salmon and she came into the world on May 5 in Dublin, Ireland. In the ballrooms of Dublin, she met her lifetime dance partner and husband William (“Bill”) Cooke. Vera and Bill married on May 8, 1948 and immigrated to Canada in 1953. With stops in Jasper, Alberta and Duncan, British Columbia, they settled in Calgary and built a life raising four daughters, Elizabeth, Carol, Lee and Veronica. Vera took great pride in her work; in particular her many years at Woodward’s and, in later years as an attendant to special needs children with Cardinal Coach lines. Always active, Vera enjoyed recreation in Alberta parks and she was a constant and artful gardener of her home. Proud of her heritage she maintained close connection to her family in Ireland.

Bill passed in 2004 and Vera missed him deeply. Her many grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great source of pride and joy. Vera lived a long and complete life. She will be greatly missed by her children; her grandchildren, Garry, Aaron, Michal, Sean Germain, Ashley Cooke, Madison Cooke, Rachel and Natalie Mack; and her great grandchildren, Jacob, Gabriel Germain, Isabella and Benjamin Boudreau.

In fulfilment of her wishes, a private mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Silver Springs, Calgary, AB. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Veronica Cooke, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

Condolence Messages

  1. Ursula Simpson (Woeste) :

To all the Cooke girls, and their families,
I ‘d like to offer you my sincere condolences on your Mom’s passing. I have wonderful memories of our moms having coffee together as we were young girls, growing up in Bowness. Your mom was definitely the prettiest! The shopping trips in the VW bug, packed with kids and dog, were so much fun, and a highlight of our lives. I’m happy to know she lived a long and wonderful life.
My best regards to all of you, especially Lee and Veronica. Your mom was a special lady.

  2. Betty Bauman (nee: Woeste) :

    Dear Roni and family,
Ursula and I were together just this Friday and were talking about our glamorous Vera. She is so fondly remembered by all of us “Woeestees”, as she and Bill called us. I can still remember her doing the jig for us in the kitchen on Bowcliffe cr. And I think that’s how I want to remember her; full of life and full of spunk. Much love to you, your sisters and your families.
