March 6, 1917 – October 12, 2014
Margaret Duchart Compton, much loved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014. She fought leaving family with the heart of a tiger, finally ending her days with us in the warm embrace of her family, in the caring and compassionate environment provided by Agape Hospice. A long life – well lived and well loved.
Born 1917 in Kincardine-on-Forth, Scotland she journeyed by boat to Canada in 1927 with her mother, Marian Millar and siblings to join her father Thomas in Exshaw, Alberta. A long-time member of the Christ Church community, Earl Grey Golf and Country Club, The Glencoe Club, art education docent at Glenbow Museum, volunteer for The Canadian Red Cross Society, and dedicated Rotary Anne (Partner). Margaret with husband Al Compton and staff built The Sportsman Ski Cellar – a successful Calgary business still in operation today. Gardener extraordinaire, lifelong learner, fashion maven, lover of art, music, mountains and travel – generous and careful “banker” to the family and teacher that money follows values. She held true to hers by investing in education, homes and travel opportunities for all her family members.
She was predeceased by husband Al Compton, brother James Millar and sister Helen O’Reilly. Margaret is survived by sisters Jess Swail (Norm) of Vancouver, Jean McCormack (Raimund Petrich) of Sherwood Park and daughters Carol Fisher (Dale) and Heather Compton (Dennis Blas) of Calgary, Patricia Compton (Stuart Curran ) of Canmore and Kathleen Compton (Andrew Orr) of North Vancouver. She was Nana to five cherished grandchildren (all of whom fondly recall their “parasailing Nana” of a past holiday), Christopher Fisher (Betty Rodriguez), Danielle Schippanoski (Steve), Kyla Fisher (Trent Anderson), Cameron Yost and Kyle Yost and “Super Nana” to two great grandchildren Meleia Anderson and Xiomara Fisher. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews across Canada. Family, friends and community ultimately defined her life.
