COLLIER – Elizabeth Jean (nee Huston)

June 5, 1928 – November 3, 2009

“Betty” Collier (Elizabeth Jean), of Crossfield, passed away on Tuesday, November 3 with her family at her side following a lengthy, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Betty is survived by her loving husband Bob, of 25 years and her four children: daughter Mary Lou Cuming (David) of Crossfield, grandson Jamie (Tracey), great-granddaughter Brooke; daughter Donna McKay (Daryl) of Edmonton, grandchildren Chelsea, Marissa and Travis; son Steve Stevens (Debbie) of Airdrie, granddaughters Holly and Kaitlin; and son Dan Stevens (Tammy), granddaughters Amy, Kara Rabel (Paul) and Lisa. Betty also leaves behind three sisters: Marge Fox and Alice Wood of Crossfield, and Mickey Huston of Victoria, as well as sisters-in-law, Patricia Bills Nelson of Phoenix and Mary Stevens of Calgary, and brother-in-law Stan Collier of Castor and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends. Born in 1928 in Drumheller, Betty was the third of five daughters born to Miller and Janey Huston. Miller’s job with the United Grain Growers brought the family to Crossfield in 1938. Betty completed her Grade 12 then worked for CIBC. She married Donnie Stevens in 1948 and became a conscientious mother and homemaker. In 1979, Betty met Bob Collier square dancing. Betty and Bob joined several types of dance groups and took part in numerous fly-in breakfasts. On November 4, 1984, Betty and Bob were married. They spent their farming months in Castor, their winters in Crossfield and their leisure time doing extensive traveling. Later, they joined the Pioneer chapter of the Good Sam’s R.V. Club and enjoyed several seasons camping throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service to commemorate Betty’s life at the Crossfield Community Centre on Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Rita Cattell of the Balzac United Church officiating. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary, 201 – 222 58 Ave SW Calgary, AB T2H 2S3 or to Memory Lane, c/o Bethany Care Foundation, 1001 17 St NW Calgary, AB T2N 2E5. Betty’s family would like to thank the wonderful, caring and competent staff of Memory Lane at the Bethany Care Centre. It was Betty’s lifelong wish that her body be donated to science.
