COLEMAN, Waselena (Sonia)

January 1, 1931 – Kahwin, AB
December 29, 2013 – Calgary, AB

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our Mother, Baba, and Great (Big) Baba, Sonia Coleman (nee Bidniak) on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the age of 82 years.

Sonia was born on the family farm at Kahwin, AB on New Year’s Day in 1931. She died peacefully with family by her side just three days short of her 83rd birthday.

Sonia was a beautiful woman but never more so than with her grandchildren. As an early birthday gift, they purchased the right to name a star after their Baba. So, when you look towards the Big Dipper, the brightest star in that vicinity will be her, smiling down on you and cheering you on in all that you do.

Sonia is survived her children, Doug (Marsha), Gayna Welsh, Dannette (Bob) Scott and Tanya (Craig) Massey; her grandchildren, Chrissy Stowe (Mark), Karen Diebert (Tyrell), Richard Semchyshen, Charene Mattson (Ryan), Timmery Tulloch (Curtis), Jason Welsh, Erica Welsh (Mike), Karoline Coleman, Lisle Massey, Coleman Massey and Skylar Massey; great-grandchildren Evan Mattson, Olivia Tulloch, Sophia and Sawyer Stowe, Katelyn and Oscar Semchyshen; siblings, Celia, Kaye, Harry (Marlene), Judy (Larry); brother-in-law Jack; sister-in-law Jean; and numerous nieces and nephews on both the Bidniak and Coleman sides. Sonia was predeceased by her husband Brian; their dog Ferbie; her sister Marie; brother George; and her parents Elizabeth and John Bidniak.

Funeral Services will be held at McClure United Church (13708- 74 Street N.W., Edmonton, Alberta) on Saturday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Sonia’s life will also be celebrated in Milk River where she resided for the last eight years, at St. Paul’s United Church on Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at 11:00 am. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to the Tree of Hope Campaign, Box 90, Milk River, Alberta, T0K 1M0 or hug your mom or grandmother in honour of Sonia.

In living memory of Sonia Coleman, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie Funeral Home, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: 1-800-661-1599.

  4. Harry & Marlene Bidniak :

    Dear Douglas, Gayna, Dannette, Tanya and Families;
    Sonia was your mother and our sister and will now so sadly be missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time.
    Sonia left each one of us with our own wonderful memories of her. As a young boy one of Harry’s most special memories of Sonia is the one of the Christmas gifts Sonia sent to the farm from Regina by train; the trip to Andrew to the Train Station is forever etched in his mind; what a special treat that was. As young children Greg and Jason especially loved the family vacations we all shared (including Auntie Kaye and Kosty) at Coeur d’Alene; Sonia truly loved these times as well. Our family will never forget and always cherish our “Holidays” to Auntie Sonia’s and Uncle Brian’s; many of which included Baba and Auntie Marie. From Gleichen, to Milk River, Vulcan and Lethbridge; each trip was so special. We barbecued, walked the dog, shopped the malls and unique stores, played cards, had wonderful visits and meals and just had lots of family fun.
    You, her children, gave Sonia a most wonderful, fulfilling life and made her so very proud. Sonia loved life; lived her life to the fullest and has left us each with a heart full of most wonderful memories that will forever keep her with us.
    May God Bless her and Keep her Forever in Peace and Forever in all our hearts.
    All Our Love;
    Uncle Harry, Aunt Marlene & Family

  7. Brian and Jean Coleman :

    Searching for information about my father, (Allan Clem Coleman, brother-in-law) my wife Jean and I discovered through relatives in ON that my Aunt Sonia was keen to meet us . We began our “adventure” May 2013 arriving in Calgary, Alberta and driving to Milk River. A most warm and loving welcome from Aunt Sonia and Kaye greeted us. Our stay was overwhelming meeting most of the family and visiting the “sights”…..Waterton Park and Writing on Stone. Most memorable being the embracing of My Aunt Sonia and family, taking us to their hearts. The visit was scheduled too short but long enough to appreciate a caring and loving Aunt Sonia who will remain in our hearts for eternity. Thank God we had no hesitation in going to Milk River and meeting Aunt Sonia . God Bless Her and support the family at this time.
    Lots of Love, Brian and Jean XX

I have so many “favorite memories to even begin mentioning them, just know my heart is broken over our loss. May God Bless you all, I know she has been welcomed into gods’ kingdom for eternity reunited with those gone before her. Love you all, Aunty Kate
