CLAYTON, Ian Harold

Ian Harold Clayton of Calgary died at peace Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Rosedale Hospice.

Ian grew up in the Chestermere area graduating from U of C with a B.Mus. performance saxophone and B. Ed. Ian was a celebrated professional musician who devoted his life to his passion. During his career in music he played with many bands, combos, as well as performing solo. Ian played with the trio “Cornerpocket” for over thirty years at the Banff Springs Hotel dining room and other similar venues, warming the hearts of many people with his unique sound. Ian enjoyed helping to seed and harvest crops in season on the family farm with Barrie and Carol. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.

He is survived by his loving wife Marlene of thirty-eight years , his son Paul, daughter Laurel and son-in-law Jason Garner, brother Barrie and sister-in-law Carol, along with many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Ian’s Life will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service will be held at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens (17th Avenue SE at Garden Road-100th Street) on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 10:00 am. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Rosedale Hospice #1245 – 70 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2X8Telephone: (403) 284 – 5195 or the charity of your choice.   6. I didn’t know about Ian’s illness until the obituary appeared and I am so terribly sorry that I was not able to see him. I have fond memories of Ian in high school (music classes and HMS Pinafore come to mind) and university and I prize the memories of working with him and his extended family at Barry’s and Carol’s farm.

    The huge size of the congregation at the funeral was a testament to his place in the community. Ian had enviable gifts that went well beyond being a fine musician and his passing is a loss not only to his family and friends but is so to our community too. If all people were like Ian, what a better place this world would be.

    My thoughts have been with you all and with Ian for several days now. Please accept our sympathies.

  7. Barry, Carol and family,
    I only just learned of Ian’s passing. I have so many fond memories of growing up together, activities at the old hall in Chestermere and being members of the Chestermere 4-H Beef Club, his musical gift was enjoyed by so many then & now.
