CHRISTIE, James “Jim” Hamilton

July 13, 1929 – September 1, 2014

Jim, beloved husband of Jean Stuart Campbell Christie (nee Wallace), passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014, at the age of 85 years, surrounded by his three children.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Jim completed his architectural education and started his practice in Scotland. Jim’s adventurous spirit brought him to Canada in the 1950’s, where he practiced architecture in Winnipeg, Manitoba with the firm Moody & Moore. It was there that he met and married his wife, Jean, also an architect, and they started their family. Through the years, Jim and Jean’s architectural careers took them and their three children to Vancouver, British Columbia (1974) and eventually to Calgary (1978), where they settled permanently. Jim was active in the Calgary community, most notably as a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and as a member and past president of the Calgary Burns Club.

Jim designed many wonderful residential and commercial projects. He was most proud of his design of the University of Winnipeg expansion (Lockhart and Centennial Halls) as well as the Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts.

Besides his loving wife, Jim will be deeply missed by his children Sarah, Andrew, and David (Jan), and three grandchildren Zoë, Justin, and Kate, all of Calgary. He also leaves to mourn his brother Peter (Christine) and sister-in-law Katie, all of Glasgow. Jim was predeceased by his mother, father, and two brothers: Johnnie and Francis (Frank). Jim was a kind and gentle man, with a wonderful sense of humour. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be missed by all those who knew him.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in honour of Jim be made to Parkinson Alberta.

In living memory of James Hamilton Christie, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  1. Don & Linda Snow :

    Dear Jean & Family:
It was with wonderment that I read Jim’s obituary notice and then thought of the times we crossed paths at various functions, as Architects and Designers, etc. 85 years is almost ten years more than my lifetime, but my elder sister just died at age 95. Jean our best wishes to you and the Christie family, sympathy and encouragement to look back with thanks to all of the good times you and Jim shared together. Don & Linda Snow

    Dear Jean
We were so saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. Difficult to believe so many years have passed since we last saw him. (He was our James Bond!) We wish that we could have met again but life goes on and we lose many dear friends at this age.
Jim’s memory will live on through his many creative works.
Our heartfelt sympathy to all the family. Hope you are well Jean and a warm hug for you at this sad time

  3. Andrew W. Gilliland :

I was saddened to read of Jim’s passing and I send my sympathy to Jean and all her family.
I knew and worked with Jim in Winnipeg on several projects and always respected him for his vision and professional excellence. He was a Master at his architectural work.
He was also a fine and caring gentleman and he made a special effort to look me up and provide support when I followed him to Calgary some years after his own move. I still value the support which he extended to me.
He will be missed by many, and I send my condolences to Jean and the family. May you find much love and support with each other.
    Sincerely, Andy Gilliland, P.Eng., FEC.

  5. We are saddened to read of Jim’s recent passing and extend our condolences to Jean and their family. It was many years ago that Jim and Jean designed our house in rural Manitoba, but their approach to their work and their life made a substantial impression on a me as a teenager and taught me the value of gentle persuasiveness coupled with determination, creativity and inspiration. Jim was the ultimate gentleman and will always be remembered.

  6. Henry Schlichter :

Jim was such a wonderful mentor to me, and to many, many, others. I will forever be grateful for the times that I shared with him. What a gentleman, and a man of integrity Jim was, in a profession that can often be quite ruthless, even unethical. Soft spoken, yet strong willed, I was amazed at how often Jim was able to persuade a client to see their project – Jim’s way.
My sincere condolences to Jean and family.
