CHRISTENSEN, Gunnar

October 25, 1930– Rudkobing, Denmark
September 10, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Gunnar Christensen, born in Rudkobing Denmark on October 25, 1930, passed away suddenly in Calgary, on September 10, 2014, at the age of 83 years. He was the beloved husband and partner to Rocio; father of William (Karen), Gunnar (Elaine) and Thomas (Jenny); step-father Guillermo and to Itza (David); and grandfather to Grace, Martin, Emily Anne, Jack, Emma, Giacamo and Diego, who were the pride and joy of his life. The legacy of Gunnar’s kind spirit, zest for life and love of all things outdoors, will live on through them.

Gunnar was well known and respected as a masterful cabinetmaker in Collingwood, Ontario. He (and Rocio) started a new chapter in his (their) life and moved to Calgary Alberta just one year ago. Gunnar and Rocio had a collaborative and caring relationship. It was based on mutual support and a deep love for each other.

When Gunnar moved to Calgary, he had the privilege of working at Mantei Woodcraft – doing what he loved most – working with his hands and wood. His generous spirit inspired everyone who knew him. He always had a smile on his lips and a kind word to say to everyone. He will truly be remembered as a man who worked hard all his life. He was a prince of a man.

Gunnar was a kind and gentle person who loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed life and all it had to offer. He was always there to brighten the lives of others. He will truly be missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Collingwood, Ontario. Expressions of sympathy may also be forwarded to the family at www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Gunnar Christensen a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575.

    Bill and Karen
Our hearts are with you in such a difficult time.
Bill, your dad had a wonderful life and we appreciated being able to meet him and keep up with his life since moving to Calgary last year.
Your eyes always lit up when you and I talked of him and we know how proud of him you were. How many men could work 50 hours a week at 83 years old and do it because he enjoyed it?
Frances and I are thinking of you and your family and your memories of Gunnar will sustain you.
    Ken and Frances.

  9. I have fond memories of Gunnar as a fellow instructor with Ontario Track 3 Ski Association for the Disabled. Gunnar was calm and gentle with all the kids and loved being on the hill with them. I had the pleasure of being Gunnars roomate on a trip to Mont Tremblant. I fondly remember conversations in the room over a cold beer.

  10. Debbie and Calista Burnett :

I was so sorry to hear your devastating news. I never met your Dad, but know how wonderful and supportive he was to you over the years and can only start to imagine what you are feeling now.

You will gradually find comfort in all the happy memories. Your dad found a new life in Calgary and lived the last year of his life in contentment here surrounded by loved ones.

Your dad lived to see you find happiness and security and love. He will have died content for knowing that. AND best of all he did not suffer a long illness.

Make sure you find time to grieve and allow yourself to do so – and don’t expect it to pass quickly. Losing a parent takes time to process.

Sending love to you and all your family.

    Debbie and Calista Burnett
