RUSSEL CHECK, age 86, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, February 2, 2013. Russel was born in the rural area of Hillsburg Municipality near Roblin, Manitoba, in 1926 to parents Henry and Mary Chick.
Russel grew up on a farm in rural Manitoba in the 1920s and 30s. He taught local school at the young age of 16. Later he went on to the University of Manitoba and graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1952 as a petroleum geologist. At the CSM he made lifelong friends and enjoyed playing soccer on the university team. He married his beautiful wife Phyllis in 1955 in Regina, Saskatchewan, with whom he raised four sons. His choice of career resulted in some amazing work opportunities in Pakistan (where he spent 2 years with Phyllis and two young children), New Orleans, and eventually Calgary.
He purchased a 160 acre farm outside Airdrie, Alberta in 1972 with a view of the Rocky Mountains and moved with his wife and now four boys. He continued to work in the oil patch and also worked his farm. He raised Simmental cattle and had a huge organic vegetable garden that supplied most of the family’s vegetables. Russel enjoyed playing his violin, hunting geese, ducks, and sometimes deer and, generally, life on the farm. After Phyllis passed away in 2005, Russel sold the farm and moved to Halifax. There he spent his remaining retirement years near his youngest grandchildren. Russel will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Russel is survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Douglas and Elizabeth Check (Woodstock, ON), Gordon Check and Jing Cai (Halifax), and Arthur Check (Calgary, AB); brother, Orest Chick and Erma Chick (Sarnia, ON), sister, Virginia Rosgen (Munson, AB), and sister-in-law Elma Chick (Roblin, MB); as well as 7 grandchildren, Jeremy, Karen, Steven, and Joanna Check, (ON) and Tobias, Amelia and Xiaoqi (Halifax); and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his loving wife of over 50 years Phyllis Irene Check; son, Murray James Check, brother, Norman Chick and brother-in-law Tom Rosgen.
