CHAPMAN, Rev. William “George”

March 13, 1925 – Lethbridge, AB
January 14, 2015 – Calgary, AB

William “George” Chapman of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the age of 89 years. He went peacefully to be with his Lord after a brief illness that could not diminish his good humour and his loving concern for his family.

George spent his life serving God faithfully. He helped start a Sunday School in Parkhill that turned into a thirty-two year ministry that laid the foundation for Oak Park Church. He then served as a Chaplain at the General and Peter Lougheed Hospitals. Along the way, he worked to help organize Hospital Pastoral Care and impacted the lives of many young people as a professor at Alberta Bible College. All of this was accomplished with the light of his life by his side, his wife Eileen (Hockley), who went to Heaven before him and with whom he is now so happily reunited. Together they raised a family, Jon (Brenda), Colleen (Doug), David (Barbara), Sheila (Doug), Michael (Becky) and Jennifer who predeceased her parents. Dear granddaughter Cayley also preceded her grandpa and now welcomes him Home. His other eighteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren all share in the loss of their Grandpa C., as well as in the blessing of being a part of this remarkable man’s life. His sole purpose in life was to share the hope that he had in his Saviour, and he shared it with love, wisdom, genuine caring, and always, laughter.

A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at Oak Park Church of Christ (11263 Oakfield Drive S.W.) on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Condolence Messages

  1. Bev Brand-Lewis :

The Chapmans were our other family. I remember George bouncing in our back door which he did regularly as he was my dads bookkeeper. I have always had a special place in my heart for George. George would always tell us that we Brands were his other kids, which made our hearts swell! Today is such a sad day for all the Chapman family and I send my love and thoughts to you all.

    Love Bev Brand-Lewis, Nanaimo BC

  4. It was my privilege to have known George as a friend and a colleague through some forty years as we worked together at the Calgary General Hospital, and in later years after we both retired. His legacy will be his love, his sense of humor, and the great amount of concern he showed to anyone with whom he had contact. We have not “lost” George, as his legacy will live on for ever, and we know where he is. We do share a feeling of loss with his family, we will always remember him with great fondness, as one who cared about us, and has now received the reward he greatly deserves.

  6. Jon, Colleen, David, Sheila, Michael and all of your families:

I hardly remember a time in my life before Uncle George and Auntie Eileen. As one of the travelling Schmoos, I always thought of your house in Parkhill as my home away from home. Nobody made me feel more a part of the family than your dad. I remember sitting around the living room singing, and singing and singing. That’s where I learned all the actions to all the Sunday School songs! Lucky thing, too, since he always seated us front and centre at Parkhill Church! I am very sad that he has left our world, but comforted in the knowledge that he has joined my mom and yours and Jen and Cayley. The memory of his smiling face, shining with the love of God, will be with us all forever.

    With love and big hugs,
    Vicki Engen (Schamuhn)

The skies of heaven will be ringing with his praises!! The memories of his and your mum’s love for mom and dad and for our family will overwhelm this small space but I pray that you’ll be consoled and comforted knowing how far and wide his reach was and how dear he was to us.

  10. Maureen Mousseau :

So sorry to hear about Rev George. I knew Pastor George from my days working at the Calgary General Hospital, specifically from singing in the choir. He was our choir conductor and what fun we all had! We laughed more than we sang – he had us in stitches most of the time – what a great sense of humour! Couldn’t wait to go to choir practice. He was THE nicest, loving, kind, most wonderful person I have ever met in my life. He was a mentor and friend to everyone. He possessed and gave unconditional love. He was a true disciple of God. As life journeys takes us elsewhere I often thought of George and hoped he was doing well. I know he had a blessed life. Just thinking of him brings a smile to my face! Wonderful memories! My sincerest condolences. Maureen Mousseau

  11. I read with sadness of George’s passing. He was an important figure at the Calgary General Hospital in fostering a sense of community among the staff. I recall with fondness how he organized and directed the christmas choir every year. He was a cheerful presence in the cafeteria.

    Dear Chapman family:
I’m very sorry to hear of your loss. George was a very inspiring influential individual who impacted people and myself in a way that I will never forget. It was a pleasure to work with him since the early 1980dies starting at the General Hospital G6 Psychiatry to the PLC.
Working as a Nursing staff in psychiatry is not always that easy and yet having George on the team with a contagious positiveness is one of the reasons I still enjoy working and caring for our Patients.
My sincere condolences to all of you in the family.
He will be greatly missed but not forgotten

I remember George well, from when I worked at the General Hospital for quite a few years. George was always smiling, as he walked down the halls, with upbeat attitude. He always took the time to chat with everyone and I always appreciated his great sense of humor too, as he always had a fun story to share with us. My condolences to his family at this time.

We are saddened to hear of Mr. Chapman’s passing. I fondly remember their house beside the Parkhill school (even though the boys side of the playground was by their house) and how kind Mr. Chapman was. He was held in high regard in our family, and has left a gaping hole in ours, as I’m sure he will be constantly missed.
