CHAPMAN – Adina (nee Schmidt)

November 11, 1917 – July 6, 2010

Adina Chapman (nee Schmidt), born November 11, 1917 in Dalmeny, SK, passed into the Lord’s presence at the Sarcee Carewest Hospice, Calgary, AB on July 6, 2010 at the age of 92. As she put it in some of her last words, “It’s time to go home, isn’t it? … I want to go home.” She was holding a portrait of herself and her late husband, Gordon V. Chapman, who went ahead to be with their Lord Jesus and heavenly Father seventeen years before her.

Gordon and Adina Chapman first met in Victoria, BC where she graduated with her R.N. and midwifery in 1946 from the Victoria General Hospital. She also attended Western Canadian Bible Institute of Regina, SK, was a nurse in the hospital in Ceepeecee, BC in preparation to go with the Christian and Missionary Alliance to Indonesia. Adina and Gordon served there for forty years. Adina did nursing in a remote area, taught for many years, and wrote a book on the life of Jesus Christ published in the Indonesian language that is still considered one of the government approved textbooks on the Christian religion. If one were to count the number of Indonesians, who without hesitation would call Adina “Ibu”, or “Mother”, then her children would number in the hundreds.

Adina is survived by her five children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; son Ken, his wife Karen and their two children Jonathan with his wife Amanda, and Rochelle with her husband Titus Heckel and their daughter Teagan; son Richard, his wife Jean and their daughter Tammy with her husband Lance Bailey; daughter Kathleen, her husband Dale Ibsen and their two children Celine and Michael; son Tim and his wife Pat and their foster daughter Summer Hartzfeld; and daughter Sylvia and her husband Gil Geske. Adina is also survived by her sister Mary Wiens.

A Memorial Service will be held at Foothills Alliance Church (333 Edgepark Blvd. N.W.) on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations are being accepted in Adina’s honour by her alma mater, Ambrose University College, 150 Ambrose Circle, Calgary, T3H 0L5. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the many who have been friend and caregiver to Mom in Calgary these twenty-one years at Foothills Alliance Church, Edgemont Residence, Foothills Medical Center Unit 32, and Sarcee Carewest Hospice.

Condolence Messages

  1. I have just read Adina’s book Embracing The Mountain; and am grateful to have known Gordon and Adina. Gordon stayed in our home several times on furlough tours when we lived in Kamloops. Our son, now 42, was especially blessed because Gordon thanked the Lord for the fact that Stan was willing to give up his room to give comfort to a missionary. For many years Gordon was at the top of Stan’s list when he prayed for missionaries. Both our children felt honored that Gordon gave them so much personal attention.

We were pleased to meet Dale and Kathleen at the Albrecht home with Lelia Lewis in Bali in 2005.

We extend our sincere sympathies to all of you and praise the Lord with you for the Christian legacy they leave for you.

    Psalm 16:5-11
