Walter Chan of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully on Monday, June 23, 2014 at the age of 89 years.
He was born April 28, 1925 in Vancouver, B.C. and moved to Calgary in the mid 1950’s. Walter started the Smitty’s Pancake House restaurant chain in Calgary in 1960 and grew the chain nationally coast to coast to become one of Canada’s largest Family Restaurant chains. He also operated Smitty’s in Hawaii for over 30 years. Walter’s greatest passions were his boat, fishing, spending time in Hawaii, Chinese food and his family.
Walter was predeceased by his father Chan Yen, mother Chan Lai Shee, brothers Leonard Chan and Harold Chan and sister Edna Lee. He is survived by his brother Donald Chan, sisters Marguerite Arbter, Ruth Hong and Ruby Chong; sons Gregory (Elaine) Chan and Anthony Chan; grandchildren Christopher (Jenny) Chan, Candice (William) Low and Elyssa Chan; great-grandchildren Kyana, Malia, Leia and Alamea Chan; Parisana, Katalyna and Allegra Low and numerous nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces. There will be no funeral as per his family’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation to your local Hospital or Health Care Facility.
