May 16, 1922 – June 21, 2012
Barb was born in Dina, AB on May 16, 1922 and passed away in Calgary, AB on June 21, 2012 at age 90.
Barb was predeceased by her parents, Lois and L.B. Nicholson; her husband Jim; brothers, Reg Dobson (Grace), Park Dobson (Ardis), Bernie Nicholson, Arthur Nicholson (Norah) and Hugh Nicholson (Ivy); and her sister Margret Terrcier (Pete). Barbara is survived by her daughter Kim Tinney (Mal); son Perry Cavanaugh (Lynda); her brother Eric Nicholson (Joan); sister-in-law Fran Nicholson and by grandchildren, Lee, Jamie, Jay and Kaleigh as well as great-grandchildren Braydyn, McKenzie and Zachary.
Barb married Jim Cavanaugh, an engineer in the RCAF, in 1947. Being an Air Force wife gave her ample opportunities to travel Canada, living on RCAF stations in Gimlie, MB, MacDonald, MB, and Clinton ON, as well as in Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary. Barb was particularly fond of her time in Banff, AB, where she moved with Jim after his retirement from the RCAF. Barb was blessed with an easy demeanour and a quick wit, making lifelong friends wherever she lived. Barb had a love for the English language and often wrote poems and songs to commemorate or remember special people, moments or events; birthday songs being a particular favourite of hers. Barbara enjoyed numerous hobbies including golf, curling and playing bridge. She was a talented musician, keeping the party going while playing the piano and singing along trying to keep the crowd on key.
Barb requested that there be no formal service for her. She asked, instead, that she host one last party. Friends and relatives will be invited to play a tune, sing a song and ‘turn down an empty glass’ in her memory. The date and time will be communicated when the details are confirmed.
