Carss, Gordon Ewen

It is with a great sense of loss that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Gordon Ewen Carss, of Calgary, at the Foothills Medical Centre on February 20, 2009. Gordon is survived by his wife of 60 years, Trudy (nee Stack); as well as his three sons and their families – James Carss, his wife Sydney Empson, and their children, Mikalina and Jordyn; Greg Carss, his wife Alicia Ponton Carss, and their children, David and Andrea; and Robert Carss and his wife, Jane Carss. Gordon was born in Lumsden, SK on February 22, 1923, where he grew up on the family farm. In 1946 he graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon with a degree in Civil Engineering. Three years later he married Trudy, and Gordon’s work provided an opportunity for them to live in Jasper, AB for a few years. They subsequently relocated back to Regina, where all three of their sons were born. Following three years as the town engineer in Flin Flon, MB, in 1965 Gordon and his family relocated to Edmonton for eleven years, where he worked for engineering consulting firm Stanley & Associates. Subsequent assignments included three years in Vernon, B.C., one year in South Korea, and projects in Grande Prairie and Whitehorse before returning to Edmonton, where Gordon retired in 1982. Ten years later, Gordon and Trudy relocated to Calgary in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They continued to travel the world extensively through their retirement years. A private yet selfless person, Gordon lived his life with enthusiasm, and rarely complained about anything. He was the ultimate role model for his family, consistently placing the interests of others ahead of his own. Since moving to Calgary, Gordon contributed the majority of his time and energy to his family and friends, with just enough left over for travel and working out at the Crowfoot YMCA. Gordon was at peace with the world, and departed on his own terms knowing that he had completed his mission. A Celebration of Gordon’s Life will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church (4612 Varsity Drive N.W.) on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. You may forward condolences through In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: (403) 521-3433.
