CARPENTER – Marian Ellen

June 11, 1943 – September 3, 2009

After a graceful and courageous battle with ovarian cancer, Marian passed away with her children by her side on September 3, 2009.

Marian grew up as a prairie girl in Gleichen, AB before moving to Yellowknife, NT where she started her family. She then returned to Gleichen where she raised her children and lived happily for a decade. She eventually settled in Calgary in 1985 after meeting her partner in life and best friend, Jim Shukin. She was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to curling, football, and hockey. Marian’s spirit, perpetual optimism, infectious laugh, as well as her passion for life inspired everyone who knew her. She had an incredible gift with people.

Marian will be missed by her loving family: son Brook (Sylvia) Carpenter; daughter Lara (Dan) Culig; grandchildren, Hanna, Julia, and John-Edward; step-children, Jay (Nicole) and Randy; brother Gary (Irene); and sister Pauline. When God built you Marian, he broke the mould!

Funeral Services will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the National Ovarian Cancer Association, 105B, 1409 Edmonton Trail, N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 3K8 Telephone: 1-866-591-6622, www.ovariancanada.org.

Condolence Messages

  1. Brenda Verhelst :

    Dear Lara/Brook and family:
I had the great honor of working with your mom from our Customer Service days with TransAlta to our last days together with Fortis.
How do I begin to express what your mom meant to me. She taught me everything I know about Customer Service and supported me in any work adventure that came my way. Always encouraging me, always my best cheer leader.
She was honest and caring and loving and yet could let you know if you crossed a line with just one look from those blue eyes.
I will miss watching her run her fingers through her hair and the laugh of the “blonde bombshell”.
God and Jim are lucky to now have her. We can certainly miss her, but the best thing all of us can do, those that had the great fortune of knowing her, is do as she would want us to do. Be good people, treat others with respect and kindness, have fun and most of all laugh.
I will miss you my friend, who will now look at me and say Brrrrrenda!
