January 9, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Our much loved Leslie peacefully passed away January 9th at the Agapé Hospice after her 19 month battle with colon cancer.
Born to Maisie and Harry Williams, Leslie grew up in Calgary but spent many summers at the family cottage in Windermere, BC. Leslie graduated from Ernest Manning High School in 1977 and SAIT in 1983. With her Honours diploma in Library Arts, her first career was as a library technician.
Leslie met her husband Wayne in 1984 when he joined a Science Fiction convention committee that she helped found. They started dating in early 1988 and were married in 1989. Son Duncan was born in 1991 and daughters Ariane and Jade arrived together in 1994.
While busy raising her young family, Leslie also started pursuing her next career as a writer and playwright. Her first paid and published article was in 2002 and she started writing interactive murder mystery plays for Pegasus Productions in 2004. Leslie’s first book, Lyranel’s Song, was published in 2005 and her second book, The Amulet of Amon-Ra, was published in 2009 and nominated for a 2010 Prix Aurora Award and a 2011 Golden Eagle Book Award. She also wrote many short stories, essays, poetry, and non-fiction articles (see http://www.lesliecarmichael.ca/plays-and-other-works.html).
When not writing, Leslie liked to create miniature dolls and build and furnish dollhouses and room boxes with themes that highlighted her wonderful sense of humour. Leslie loved music and really enjoyed singing soprano in her church choir where she treasured the fun, humour, and fellowship of the choir members. She also liked to travel and was able to visit Egypt (2000 with a group of fellow belly dancers) , Taiwan (2002 for a family wedding), Iceland, Scotland, England, and Germany (2010 with sister Heather). In Iceland, they met distant relatives Jóhanna Hermansen, Erika Jósepsdóttir, Hervör Lind Þráinssdóttir, and others.
Leslie is survived by Wayne, Duncan, Jade, and Ariane; older siblings Kimborllaye (Helen) Lyncaster, Susan Kemble, Heather Williams, and Neil Williams; nieces and nephews Patti Wardlaw (Dave), Sandi Kemble Ammann (Terry), Walter Kemble, Michaelle Teuscher, Cameron Lawrence (Natasha),Jesse Williams, Regan Williams; parents-in-law Joyce and Stuart Carmichael; Brothers-in-law Allan Carmichael (Shannon) and Brian Carmichael (Meini).
