CARLSEN, Kathleen Jeanne

October 28, 1958 – Scarborough, ON
November 25, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just over a year ago Kathleen Jeanne Carlsen, born Oct 28 1958, affectionately known as Jeanne to friends and family, lived life to the fullest, she carried that torch to her last breath, she adored her three children Kristopher, Laura Kaye, and Erika, and her treasured newborn grandson Gunnar. Loved by her mother Kaye, her brother’s Dave and John and her extended family.

A spirited competitive swimmer all her life with her husband Glenn Carlsen always at her side, together they not only swam but owned and operated Fitness Equipment Calgary from the summer of ’92 until it’s recent sale.  Jeanne was a highly ranked Masters swimmer holding world records in her age group and some of that championship spirit can be accredited to her mother Kaye Neale (nee McNamee), and her late father Rich Ferguson, who were both Olympic athletes in their day.  She passed away from complications of the advancing Cancer on Nov. 25 2014 at Foothills Hospltal.   Courageous to the end she was still working out the day before and dancing in the halls.  She was  one of the great ones touching many lives and will be missed.

Please join us in Celebrating Jeanne’s Life well lived at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow with snacks and beverages. Dress is purple casual, you are invited to wear your Jeanne’s Team shirts.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers the family have asked that donations be made to Jeanne’s pancreatic cancer fighting initiative, albertacancer.ca/jeanneswimteam2015 a swim event to be held January 1, 2015, go to the web site and find out more.

  8. Hello. I just heard the news of Jeanne’s passing from another Canadian swimmer friend, and wanted to offer my sincere condolences to the entire family. My family and I were very close with the whole Ferguson clan growing up, and I have such fond memories of Jeanne from the Burlington Swim Team and the get togethers we had with our two families in the late 60s. As my first coach, Jeanne’s mom gave me my start in swimming, which ultimately had an enormous impact on my life. I know many others who share these feelings.

Jeanne always had a hugely positive attitude, and through her swimming was an inspiration to others. I was fortunate to reconnect through Facebook a few years ago, and she got me super fired up to get back into the pool and to take up open water swimming, which I’ve done. She will be so missed.

To the family: please know you are in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss of Jeanne.

To Mrs Ferg: please know how much you have positively impacted my life, , and the warm thoughts I have about you and your family at this difficult time.

    Peace, Jeff Naylor

I was so saddened to hear of Jeanee’s passing. As a mother it was heart wrenching and as a friend it was very devastating. Gord and I haven’t been in touch with you and the family for quite a long time = Shameful! – We have tried a few times to take a trip to Vancouver but something always comes up to prevent it from happening. Right now I have health problems which have not been resolved but will call you when things get straightened out and hopefully improve. Please asscept our condolences and our sympathies to your family and we look forward to seeing you again soon and meeting Ron.
    All our best
    Pat and Gord

  12. I swam with Jeanne when we were teenagers. I heard through mutual friends about her illness and just now about her death. My standout memories of her are as a positive, bubbly, energetic young person who was very supportive of the efforts of others. Our paths didn’t cross in life after I stopped swimming (she never did stop!), but the swimming community is still close and I heard about her activities through others. Her personality continued to shine into adulthood, motherhood and as a grandmother. I admired her spirit very much when we were teens, and her spirit grew stronger throughout her life to touch those around her. I would like to extend my sympathy to Jeanne’s family, and also to say that she remains very much with you and carried in your hearts.
    Hugs,
    Heidi Borner

I only found out recently about Jeanne passing and wanted to say I’m very sorry for your loss. I mostly worked with Glenn @ Kensington for a couple of years and learned much of what I know today because of them both.
Glenn and Jeanne were instrumental in my personal and professional growth in many ways, not to mention many others.

I thank them for the opportunity, and for what they do for others.

    Best regards,

    Kyle

Glen – during the holiday weekend, I was sitting at my desk reminicing about my time at MSC and deleting old emails. I found one from Jeanne describing the battle that loomed before her…and then I read about her passing. I am so sorry for your loss. I considered her a friend and someone whom I admired. I am glad to have known her.
    God bless,
    Nancy
