CARD, Lester “Les” Charles

August 7, 1919 – Cardston, Alberta
January 27, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Lester Card passed away peacefully on the morning of January 27, 2015 at the age of 95 years.

Les started his life of adventure on August 7, 1919 in Cardston. Les was a life-long scouter and lived by the motto of being prepared. He was an amateur radio operator for 77 years, with the current call sign VE6CA. Lester joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 at the age of 21 as a Leading Aircraftsmen WEM(R). He volunteered to protect his country and he didn’t mind if he died doing it, because he was committed to the cause. During WWII he was stationed in Great Britain, Malta and North Africa. Lester continued to serve in radar and telecommunications until 1968, when he retired from the RCAF as a Squadron Leader. After his military service, Les taught school for a number of years and spent his remaining working years as a geologist, retiring when he was 80.

Les is survived by his wife, Jean, and children Cam (Deborah), Joseph (Brenda), Carol (Emad), Jennifer (Brent) and Jon. Lester also had many grandchildren of whom he was very proud: Sarah, Jonathan, Caitlin, Whitney, Jennifer, Mike, David, Joanna, Chris, Jacob, Elizabeth, Alison, Caitlin, Brittany, Holliston, Richard and Harlow, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints Bow Valley Chapel (2526 24 Ave NW), on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Lester Card, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

I met Les when I visited my dear friend Carol. Every time I travelled to Canada I looked forward to spending time with Les and Jean. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. His mischievous sense of humour, his interest and knowledge were a delight to experience. He lived a full and happy life and all who knew him were blessed.
    Vale Lester

  7. To the entire family, my sincerest condolences. Although I did not know Les all that well the times I did chat with him were inspiring because of his wealth of knowledge about ham radio. To learn from his obituary of his 28 years of service in the RCAF means that in his Honour, the “Last Post” and “Reveille” have been played and the inscription on his hat badge remains; “Per Ardua Ad Astra”–Through Adversity to the Stars. He will rest in Peace Don Lloyd ve3dd

  10. Elizabeth (Beth) Card Hansen :

Dear Aunt Jean and all my cousins Cameron, Joseph, Carol, Jennifer and Jon, I send my love to you at this time of the passing of your beloved companion and father. I truly loved your dad. He had a love of life and a zest for adventure that was unique as the many experiences he had in his life. ( I hope he or some of you write his history – it would be fantastic). I appreciate always his warm kind welcome when ever I saw him. He was one of the favorite Great Uncles of my children when he came to visit with all of his stories about meeting grizzly bears and panning for gold, War experiences… The world here will truly miss this great, good man and heaven will be a better place to have him. Sending you all hugs. May the memories of your father comfort you and remain with you. I know my father, Brigham adored this younger brother. All of my love to you. Sending you hugs across the miles. I wish I could be there to personally express my love. Beth Card Hansen.

  11. Our love to all of you at this this tender time. We so wanted to be there for the service, but
Mom’s health would not permit it. I have fond memories of Uncle Les, his zest for life, cheerful nature and that little twinkle in his eyes. He made me feel at home when we visited and I will always remember your kindness to me when I stayed at your your home many years ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

    Love Maren and Rhea

  13. Donald Newton :

Dear Jean, I know you now have an adjustment to make, but are happy knowing that your beloved Lester is in a better place visiting family members that predeceased him. It is comforting to know that you will see each other again. I didn’t know Lester well, he married my grade five teacher, Jean Nelson, who I thought was the prettiest lady I knew! I visited them whenever I was in Calgary and enjoyed hearing about Lester’s many adventures. Because I lost my beloved Colleen last year, I know that with the support of family and church friends you will find peace. I hope to be in Calgary this summer and will come for a visit…..meanwhile my sympathy and condolences.

Condolences to the Card Family. Les and Jean were certainly at the top of our list of favourite neighbours. Mr. Card always had a big smile and usually something yummy to offer from the garden or the kitchen. Our daughters Claire and Georgia referred to him as “Mr. Pickle”. He will be missed!
