Husband of Louise for 33 years; father to Sandra Burns, Colleen Bors (Trevor), and Jim Burns (Leslie); step-father to Kim Berlin (Michael Hawley) and Kristi Berlin (John Krien); loving Opa to Meagan Duke, Calvin Burns, Allison, Elizabeth and Jennifer Bors, Jackson Berlin, Chris and Jason Spiker; brother of Dorothy Hutton (Lorne); cousin to Dwayne Skinner; and uncle to Mike and Lea Hutton, and Shane Skinner.
Don graduated from Queen’s University in 1953. He began what would become an extremely successful career in the petroleum industry in western Canada, eventually founding his own company, Rideau Petroleums Ltd. For his many contributions to the oil industry over a 50-year span, Don was inducted into the Manitoba Oil Museum Hall of Fame in 2006. He lived a full and rich life. He was an astute businessman whose life was an example of personal and professional integrity. Don was a true scientist with a “show-me-the-proof” attitude. He loved music, especially jazz and classical. He was an expert skier, an avid sailor, a keen amateur astronomer, a world traveller…and the original distracted driver. Don’s qualities as a loyal parent, exceptional friend, devoted grandfather and loving husband will be missed by so many.
The family extends gratitude to Don’s medical team at Copeman Health Care and to Don’s loyal caregivers Randy, Mari, Alex and Mo for all the kindness and compassion they gave to Don.
