BURNS, Donald Robertson

Don Burns of Calgary and Kelowna, beloved husband of Louise Berlin, passed away on October 17, 2013 at the age of 82 years.

Husband of Louise for 33 years; father to Sandra Burns, Colleen Bors (Trevor), and Jim Burns (Leslie); step-father to Kim Berlin (Michael Hawley) and Kristi Berlin (John Krien); loving Opa to Meagan Duke, Calvin Burns, Allison, Elizabeth and Jennifer Bors, Jackson Berlin, Chris and Jason Spiker; brother of Dorothy Hutton (Lorne); cousin to Dwayne Skinner; and uncle to Mike and Lea Hutton, and Shane Skinner.

Don graduated from Queen’s University in 1953. He began what would become an extremely successful career in the petroleum industry in western Canada, eventually founding his own company, Rideau Petroleums Ltd. For his many contributions to the oil industry over a 50-year span, Don was inducted into the Manitoba Oil Museum Hall of Fame in 2006. He lived a full and rich life. He was an astute businessman whose life was an example of personal and professional integrity. Don was a true scientist with a “show-me-the-proof” attitude. He loved music, especially jazz and classical. He was an expert skier, an avid sailor, a keen amateur astronomer, a world traveller…and the original distracted driver. Don’s qualities as a loyal parent, exceptional friend, devoted grandfather and loving husband will be missed by so many.

The family extends gratitude to Don’s medical team at Copeman Health Care and to Don’s loyal caregivers Randy, Mari, Alex and Mo for all the kindness and compassion they gave to Don.

A memorial service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through Don was a philanthropist in life and would encourage gifts be made to benefit others on his death. In lieu of flowers, donations to University of Calgary Hotchkiss Brain Institute – Dementia Research 2500 University Dr NW Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 or to the Calgary Humane Society, 4455 – 110th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7, telephone: (403)205-4455, would be appreciated.

    Just learned of

    To Don’s family;
    We knew Don for many years when we lived in Regina and worked with him on several projects. We have lived in Red Lodge, Montana now since 1976. Don was down here quite a few
    years ago for about a week working on a project for us in northern Montana. We had a big snow
    one day and we went skiing along with Dave Surjik my partner at the time. There was no way I could keep up with Don skiing down hill in that heavy powder.
