BUNYAN, Lorne Wilfred

January 27, 1926 – November 24, 2011

It is with sadness and gratitude that the family of Lorne Bunyan announces his passing on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at the age of 85 years.

Lorne was born in Edmonton, AB where he spent his early childhood. His family moved to Calgary where he attended Sacred Heart School, graduating from St. Mary’s High School; Lorne joined the RCAF where during WW II he became an instructor. At the end of the war, Lorne went on to further his education at the University of Alberta, Calgary for two years. He started teaching in a small country school near Pincher Creek AB. His first permanent appointment was in the village of Beiseker, AB, where he remained until 1963. During this time, Lorne met and married Elaine Meidinger. Lorne and Elaine went on to share 61 happy years together and raised three daughters, Kathy, Maureen and Shelley.

His next teaching assignment took Lorne and his family to Calgary where he was principal of St. Michael Elementary and Junior High School from 1963 – 1966. The following year they lived in Eugene, Oregon where Lorne completed his Doctorate of Education Degree. Upon returning to Calgary, Lorne became the Coordinator of Elementary Education for the Calgary Separate School District. Lorne also was elected to the Senate of the University of Calgary during this time. Lorne retired from his career in education in 1987 and this allowed Elaine and Lorne to further pursue their love of travel at home and abroad. Over the years, Lorne had been involved in a variety of activities such as: involvement in choirs, Calgary Pony Club, and the Steele Scouts Commemorative Cavalry Troop. His other favorite hobbies included: fly fishing, hiking, skiing, horseback riding, and swimming. Both Elaine and Lorne showed a great love and respect for the outdoors.

Lorne is survived by his wife Elaine, three daughters, Kathy (Brian), Maureen (David), Shelley (Mike); eight grandchildren, Geoffrey and Eric, Jessica, Curtis and Greg, Sheila, Liam and Connor and other extended family. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Frances.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community Church (800 – 85 Street S.W.) on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 6. Elaine and Family,
I’m greatly sorry for your loss at this time. Lorne inspired and supported me in so many ways during my years in Beiseker highschool. His belief in me and his striving for excellence in his teaching, were fine models for my own work with students over the years. I smile inside with warm memories of some of his “unique” quirkiness in management style in Beiseker classrooms in the ’50s, certainly (and gratefully)tempered by the love of his wife and daughters! But committed to his students,he was. I am forever grateful for walking a small part of my journey with him. Bless you all.

    Mrs. Bunyan, Maureen and family,
My Mom, Margaret Kehler, just emailed me to let me know that Mr. Bunyan had passed away. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. He is the principal I remember from my first years in school, and later, as the father of my friend, Maureen. It has been years since I spoke to Maureen, but just received an email from Fran Lariviere recently and Maureen was mentioned. My condolences to all of you in your time of loss.

  14. Dear Mrs. Bunyan,

My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Dr. Bunyan gave me my first teaching position at St. Leo in 1973. He was so kind to me and came to visit me in my classroom a few times. He always made me feel like I was doing a really great job. I am still part-time teaching, but will never forget where it all began.

  15. Marg & Casey Holmes :

Elaine, please accept my condolences for your grief. Lorne was the very first resident that both Casey & I met at Col Belcher 2 years ago in the fall of 2009.. It was in the Winter Garden where Lorne introduced himself to myself & my husband Casey who became a new resident there. Lorne went to great detail with pride showing and describing the significance of his ‘purple ring’. What a great man! What a loss to the Calgary Separate School System and community. I’ve alwaqys admired your courage, Elaine.

Blessings to you and your family.
    Love,
    Marg & Casey

Mrs. Bunyan and family, I was very sad to hear about Mr. Bunyan’s passing. I have been away so this is why I’m am writing this later. I will never forget Mr Bunyan and yourself as good friends of my mom, Dorothy Ries. I also will never forget the picture I have in my head of Mr. Bunyan singing in the choir, with the boys and men choir also the church choir. He was one of the few men to be singing. Those days are long gone but will never be forgotten. He was so kind and willing to listen. He will be missed I’m sure. God bless you all and watch over you during this time of sorrow.

  20. On behalf of Veronica Phelan and myself, I would like thank Mr. Bunyan for being responsible for enabling both of us to be transferred to a new position after teaching students with Downes’ Syndrome for four years. Lorne recognised that we were ready for a change and I would like to say, “Thank-you.” Veronica now teaches in Ottawa but we are still in touch all these years… another plus for Calgary Catholic!

I offer my sincere sympathies to Lorne’s family. I only recently learned of his passing and was greatly saddened by it. Lorne was my principal from 1963 to 1966 at St Michael’s and his wisdom, unique teaching style and unflagging belief in the promise of today’s youth greatly influenced me and help to shape my future. I am lucky to have known him.
