BUCKLEY, Stephen J.

February 23, 1919 – May 12, 2012

Stephen J. Buckley a dear husband, father, grandfather and friend left us on Saturday, May 12, 2012 in Calgary at the age of 93.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Anne; son Brian (Lydia) Buckley; James (Shizu) Holden, Pam (Mike) Leziert and Geordie (Noa) Holden; seven cherished grandchildren Brett, Jillian, Saya, Ami, Breanna, Alec, and Ashley and nieces and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his son Philip (1970); sisters, Joyce, Ethel, Nellie and his brother Eric.

Steve was born in Stoney Middleton, England. The family emigrated in 1924 and started a dairy farm outside Okotoks. Steve attended UBC and achieved a Bachelor of Arts, English and Applied Science-Mechanical Engineering degrees. For many years Steve worked for Schlumberger Canada in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. Following his passion for teaching, Steve completed an Education Degree in Calgary. Steve was a brilliant man and a natural teacher. He taught at Henry Wisewood High School and SAIT. In 1986 Steve and Anne moved to Sidney, B.C. Although retired, Steve continued with his love of teaching at Camosun College and tutoring of High School students until they moved back to Calgary in 2005. He was emotional, kind and caring; a solid friend, a mentor, and a role model. He was a wonderful storyteller with a great sense of humour and would often regale family, friends, and sometimes strangers with tales of growing up on the farm and his days as an engineer at Schlumberger. Steve leaves his family with many fond memories of daily life and fantastic summers at Shuswap Lake. Steve loved Keeshonds, Sam, Chan, and Danko, they were all part of his family.  We wish to thank all the caring staff at Newport Harbour.

Please join us for a Celebration of Steve’s Life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Please accept our sympathy. Steve was a pillar. He tutored me through a correspodence course in statistical annalysis and his comment was that he also learned from our study. I will always remember his distinctive and rich voice. Although lost to him in later years his memory was phenomenal as he commented on our pictures of England

Steve imparted his wisdom always in such a respectful way – somehow, he made each person feel they were his equal (few of us were). He broke into song quite often for no reason other then that he felt joyful in that moment. I have decades of happy memories to fill the sad places, and the surety he again sings such ditties as “where do you go to my lovely? when you’re fast asleep in your bed”. Brian, you are blessed to be his son and Anne and family, he loved you fully.

Although Steve was my uncle, I had absolutely none of his gifts with math. Thanks to his patient tutoring, i was able to get through it. I will always remember his talent for teaching the unteachable!
    So sorry for your loss.
