Dick Buckland of Calgary, AB, passed away on August 31, 2012 at the age of 88 years after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Dick was born on August 18, 1924 in Swift Current, Sask. to Stanley and Daisy Buckland and was the youngest of four children. He was raised on a farm, attended schools in Dunelm and Swift Current and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he graduated as a pilot in 1945. After WWII ended, Dick attended University at Regina and Saskatoon, and graduated in 1949 as a Geological Engineer. He moved to Alberta to pursue his career in the oil patch, where he met and subsequently married in October of 1952, Helen Hewson of Calgary. They had four children: Don, Gary, Lorne and Gaye. Dick worked as a geologist for Royalite Oil and Canadian Industrial Gas & Oil, and was Vice President of Exploration at Norcen Energy Resources. Thereafter, he became self-employed and was successful in developing several oil discoveries in Alberta. Dick was co-founder of three junior oil companies: L.K. Oil & Gas, Triweb Resources and Webex Oil & Gas. Because of his love of farming, he established a tree farm in Cayley, AB, where he also indulged in his love of tractors. The tree farm is now operated by his son Lorne.
Dick is survived by his sister Ursula Bue of Cabri, Sask., his three sons Don, Gary (Jacky) and their sons Stephen and David, Lorne (Shannon) and his daughter Gaye; several nieces and nephews; Bettie Davison, his good friend and caregiver; and his second wife Gabrielle and her children Michele and Michael (Cathy) Geisler.
Dick was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Daisy, his sister Joan Kurtz, his brother Arthur and his first wife Helen.
At Dick’s request there will be no funeral services; however, a gathering of family and close friends for the spreading of Dad’s ashes will be held at the farm on October 20th.
