BUCHANAN, Jessie Wardrop Scott

February 14, 1935 – Stonehouse, Lanarkshire
December 19, 2017 – Calgary Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Jessie Buchanan passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at the Bethany Care Centre after a brief yet brave battle with cancer.

Jessie was born and raised in Stonehouse Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was very involved with the United Free Church of Scotland in the choir, as a Sunday school teacher and helped with the youth. She worked at the Larkhall Cooperative in the ladies wear department. Jessie met her husband Charlie at a local dance. Although Charlie was from Royal Deeside, they lived in the small village where Jessie grew up. They had both sons in Scotland before immigrating to Canada, where Hazel was born. When asked why they chose Canada, Jessie would say that her husband “took a notion to it”. She made Canada her new home. Jessie seldom complained and treated everyone with kindness and respect and expected nothing in return. She was well liked by her care-givers, friends and strangers alike. Jessie used to say “the power of prayer hath brought more miracles than this world can dream of”. May our Heavenly Father embrace our dear Jessie with his love and may she rejoice with family and friends since passed – no more pain or worries.

Jessie is survived by her son, Allan Buchanan; daughter, Hazel Buchanan; granddaughter, Caitlin Hornbeck; brother, John Pearson; and sister, Mary Ann Gilmour, as well as many nieces, nephews and in-laws. She was predeceased by her husband, Charlie Buchanan and eldest son, Scott Buchanan.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Wild Rose United Church (1317 1st Street North West, Calgary, AB) on Saturday January 20, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Megan’s Rescue Efforts Society, 40 Erin Grove, S.E. Calgary, AB T2B 2Z5, Condolences may be forwarded through
In living memory of Jessie Buchanan, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.
