May 28, 1931 – April 19, 2012
Alfred “Gunter” Bruckner, beloved husband of Lorayne, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the age of 80 years.
Gunter was born on May 28, 1931 in Hirschfeld (East Germany) to Alfred and Gertrud Bruckner. At the age of eighteen, he escaped into West Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1952. Gunter began working at Calgary Transit in 1957 apprenticing as an auto mechanic. He worked his way up in the Amalgamated Transit Union where he was elected as business agent and served until his retirement in 1987.
Gunter loved the outdoors. He was a member of the Evergreen and Calgary Outdoors Clubs. He loved to cross country ski, hike, and bicycle tour. He enjoyed many years of volunteering for the Food Bank and Samaritan’s Purse. The highlight of his retirement was the many years of R.V. travelling with Lorayne, and backpacking the West Coast, Chilkoot and Gros Morne Trails. He was proud to introduce his family and later his grandsons to his birthplace in Germany.
A loving, gracious and generous man, Gunter will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
Gunter is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Lorayne; daughter Debra (Roman Cooney); son Gary; beloved grandchildren, Conor, Dylan, Reyna, Kendra, Terra and Mya; sisters Rosel and Gisela (Wilfried); and nieces Petra and Margit in Germany.
