BROWN, Evelyn Mae (nee Dennis)

August 31, 1927- October 7, 2017

Evelyn slipped away quietly surrounded by family after a sunny October day.

Born in Calgary and raised in the Manchester area of what later became south Calgary, Evelyn had a happy childhood and enjoyed many summers at her aunt and uncle’s ranch near Lundbreck. Determination and hard work led to one of the first Imperial Oil scholarships ever granted. Evelyn attended the University of Alberta, where she studied Geology and met the love of her life Jim Brown. She graduated in 1949 and worked in Calgary as a geologist at Union Oil. She and Jim married in 1951 and although she left the professional practice of geology when children began arriving, she never lost her interest in the field. She went on to inspire her five children with her abounding curiosity, warmth and love. Evelyn had many interests including artistic crafts, cooking and genealogy. She was deeply involved for more than 50 years in the University Women’s Club and the Alberta Handicraft Guild. Her support for women in university led to the creation of a scholarship in her name. Her interest in hooking rugs led to many annual rug camps in Banff with dear friends. Evelyn enjoyed road trips, and also made many trips to England in search of ancestral roots.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jim Brown, and by her children, Jim (Jeannine), Kathy, Nancy, Howard (Dana) and Glenn; five granddaughters and a grandson; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Dennis and Louise Gelinas; sister-in-law, Kathy Dennis and by several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Grace Dennis, brother, Raymond and son-in-law, Glenn Foulds.

We all miss her very much and will treasure her memory forever. We will hold a private family memorial at a later date.
Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Evelyn Brown, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
