BROWN – Brent

December 9, 1954 – June 30, 2011

The family of Brent Brown is saddened to report his sudden death on Thursday, June 30, 2011 in the peaceful setting of their mountain home.

Right now, Brent would say: “The shame is not how short life is but how long it takes some people to start living”. And live it well he did! Brent has left behind his wife and best friend Tricia (O’Byrne) and his four children, Ryan, Caron, Christopher and Remee and his first wife and long time friend, Sandy Last. Brent is also succeeded by a “bunch of Browns”, including his parents Jack and Georgia and his brother John (Brenda). He was predeceased by his brother Kelly on January 22, 2009. Tricia and children are supported by her parents Jim and Leone O’Byrne and their family who held Brent as their cherished friend.
Brent was well along in his ever evolving “bucket list”, which included exploring the world with friends and family and his joy for big boat sailing off of Canada’s west coast and throughout the Caribbean.

“You can’t control the direction of the wind but you can adjust your sails”

Brent was born in Calgary and developed his negotiating skills from his first words. He started his career as an orange squeezer at the age of 12 and then at 17 spent 6 months in the Arctic islands which showed him the benefits of higher education (U of Calgary). The oil industry treated him well, particularly as an “oil trader extraordinaire”. Recently, he served as President of SemCanada Crude Company and a VP at Petrogas Marketing.

A celebration of Brent’s energetic and vibrant life will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W.) on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 1:30 p.m., Archdeacon Ansley Tucker officiating. Memorial tributes may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 200 119 14th Street NW Calgary, T2N 1Z6 (403 264-5549). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com

In living memory of Brent Brown, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. Christine Lindstrom :

My sincere condolences in the loss of Brent at such a young age! True to himself he did live life to the fullest and any time we met over the last 30 years he was off on a new adventure. He had great taste as well and I recall fondly he introduced me to my first taste of Remy Martin at the Calgary Stampede in the early 80’s. My heart goes out to the family and our thoughts are with you during this grieving process. Chris and Gareth

  6. Roberta and Dennis Lanthier :

We were so saddened to hear of Brent’s passing, and our hearts go out to you. Brent was an amazing person with such a zest for life. We had the pleasure of celebrating numerous community events with Brent, most importantly the annual wine and cheese that we all put together. Our memory is of Brent’s energy and enthusiasm when he walked into the room. He was always ready to lend a hand, and help out wherever needed. He was great behind the bar at the wine and cheese, and he always made any newcomers feel welcome and more importantly, glad they came to such a fun event. I personally had the pleasure of putting up Christmas lights with him last Christmas. He was so patient with me as I would direct and redirect him as he was doing the job.
He was such a willing participant. His love of life in all its glory shone through and was infectious. We will forever remember him for his smile and his evident happiness in his life. Our hearts go out to all of the Browns at this time and we wish you peace in your hearts for having had such a wonderful husband, father and friend in your lives.

Much love, Roberta and Dennis Lanthier and family

    Dear Georgia and Jack;
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Brent’s passing. How tremendously difficult it must be for you both and for Brent’s family.
We knew Brent through the Industry and who in the patch didn’t know Brent !! A fun loving guy, great to be around, with his story-telling skills almost as good as yours, Jack.
Please accept our sympathy and know that we will remember him in our prayers.
    Blessings,

    July 4, 2011

    Brent,

You are my friend. Our friendship makes me a better person. In everything we do together you always raise the bar of expectations to squeeze each experience for all that life has to offer. Your infectious smile and quick wit lives with me forever. Besides the two decades of challenges we both faced together in our work careers you create many terrific memories and lasting impressions: sailing the BVI’s, sailing numerous times to Catalina, “no luffing”, sailing across the Sea of Cortez, gorging on sushi, outlet shopping, fishing trips, sharing Wilbur Smith, sailing off the anchor at Virgin Gorda, snorkeling at “Cow Wreck Beach”, Green Shakes, spooky memory, supernatural wisdom and perspective, the perfect latte, crabbing in Genoa Bay, constant curiosity, your love of family and for the for the people that served you in the work place . . . . . .

    As you say . . . .”Is there anything else . . . . .?”

It was a thrill to work with your dad, Brent, this year in U10 soccer, Remee. He had a great passion for the team and the organizing of the team. He will be missed by Paige and myself and the rest of the community. Great volunteers and great Dads are sometimes tough to find. Brent was both. Our thoughts are with you, Remee, and your family.

  14. Susan & Dave Schaus :

This is a very sad day for me and many others. I first met Brent in 1978 when I joined Dome and knew that this was a special person. Brent & I worked together in the LPG business for many years at Dome and then again at what would become Enron Canada. Brent was an optimist and had a flair for living. An evening with ” downtown Brent Brown ” was always an adventure.
Our condolences to Trish, Jack, Georgia, Sandy and all the kids. We will miss him so we can only imagine what you are feeling.
I can’t believe that this bigger than life guy is no longer with us.

  20. Well Brent, I miss you already. Now, who will show up in sandles and Hawaiian shirts in February? Who else thinks that inducting customers as parrot heads is a legitimate business expense? Who else thinks that tying me to the sail mast is funny? (It is not) I’ll never forget the moments when you’d get that twinkle in your eye. You knew something good and fun was coming. We all did too…except we were nervous. You always made life exciting for all of us. You will always be in our hearts.

Tricia & family: We heard today that Brent had passed away. It is such sad news for everyone at the Sportsman’s Club. For many years, Brent would arrive at our fishing lodge leading his group, wearing his tie & thongs. It was then that we noticed that Rivers Inlet was a much brighter by his very presence. Brent really did light up the world. Please accept our sincerest condolences. Simon & Barbara
