BROSS, Bert Jerome

July 25, 1944 – Jansen, SK
September 24, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Bert Jerome of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the age of 70 years.

Bert was born in Jansen, SK and attended Jansen Elementary School from grades one to nine, Lanigan High School from grades ten to twelve, and attended the University of Saskatchewan for four years. He worked in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan’s water and sewer installations for many years before joining the City of Calgary Department of Waterworks, where he would work until his retirement in 2008. Shortly after retiring, he moved to McKenzie Towne Care Centre. He participated in many of the Centre activities and was loved by many. Everyone who knew him would seek his advice and he loved to give it, but volunteering in the dining room every morning became his favourite way to contribute. Those who knew him at the Centre will never forget him and will miss him so. Some of his hobbies were photography, playing piano and singing. He also enjoyed maintaining contact with many friends and acquaintances from as far back as early childhood.

Bert is survived by brothers Ray and Ed; sister Nell (Richard); nephews Stephen (Tylar) and Darcy (Nicole); nieces Rhonda (Tom) and Colleen (Don), and their children. He was predeceased by his mother Dora, father Peter, and sister-in-law Luciel.

  5. Carol Bigland :

We are so saddened to hear of Bert’s passing. We first met Bert at Peter Lougheed, where he shared a room with my Dad, Erland Markstrom & where both convalesced thru their surgeries. They then began rehabilitation at Glenmore West at the same time, only to eventually meet again in Peter Lougheed a second time & eventually both resided in McKenzie Towne Care Centre. Bert was such a social & personable man; he took enormous interest in other people & was so kind to our family. We will miss him dearly. Our deepest sympathy to his family. Erland & Ethel Markstrom, Carol & Doug Bigland, Kurt, Victoria & Emma Markstrom.

  6. Christine Dombroski :

Condolence to the Bross Family – Ed, Raymond and Nell Murphy and the extended family. Bert, will be sadly missed as my cousin and friend. I decided to move to Calgary in July 1978. Mom encouraged me to contact the Bross family. She spoke very highly of her nephew’s and her niece’s accomplishments. I only had vague memories of visiting and spending the night at the Bross family in their Jansen home but very memorable (escorting Bert to pick eggs from the hens, seeing my first domestic live bunnies, sleeping overnight at their house and the aroma of frying sausages the next morning). Krista and I stayed at Nell and Richard’s place for a while then moved in with Aunt Dora and Bert for a few months. Bert was the care giver for his mom for many years. It was very exciting to meet relatives from my mom’s side of the family. Bert and Dora were very inviting, our life long relationship started. Bert was a cross-word puzzle fanatic his kitchen table was loaded with countless reference books in every language. He was my source of information, he had an impeccable memory and vast knowledge on any given topic. He loved to garden, my daughter and I spent many hours in the garden with him he often shared his bountiful vegetables and fruits with us. We enjoyed listening to him playing the piano, he was also adventurous in the kitchen trying new recipes. My daughter Krista called him Uncle Bert. Bert surprised Krista with her first doll for Christmas, which was as tall as she was at one year’s old, how she loved that doll, Bert enjoyed watching her carrying it around, dressing her up and talking to her. Krista and I were frequent visitors at Bert’s home, her relationship with Bert continued into her adult life. Krista and I always teased Bert, we had many laughs. Without Bert I would not have known anything about my mom’s early childhood and our relatives. Bert always loved to hear about my visits to the relatives, we spent many hours on the phone over the years exchanging stories. I just visited Bert a few weeks ago and had a long conversation with him the week before he passed. It was a shock to hear of his passing.
    Rest in Peace. Bert
